6.4Cavitation
Animportantfactorinthesatisfactoryoperationofapumpisthe
avoidanceofcavitation,bothforgoodefficiencyandforpreventionof
impellerdamage.
Asliquidpassesthroughtheimpellerofapump,thereisachangein
pressure.Iftheabsolutepressure oftheliquiddropstothevapour
pressure,cavitationwilloccur.Theregionofvaporizationhindersthe
flowandplacesalimitonthecapacityofthepump.
Asthefluidmovesfurtherintoaregionofhigherpressure,the bubbles
collapseandtheimplosionofthebubblesmaycausepittingofthe
impeller.
Cavitationismostlikelytooccurnearthepointofdischarge (periphery)
ofradialflowandmixedflowimpellers,wherevelocitiesarehighest.It
mayalsooccuronthesuctionsideoftheimpeller,wherethepressures
arethelowest.
