Nelson Mandela (1918 2013) Anti-apartheid leader.

. Mandela, spent over twenty years in jail for his opposition to the
racist apartheid system which excluded blacks from many areas of society. He was elected the first President of democratic
South Africa in 1994. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in
harmony and with equal opportunities. Nelson Mandela.

Martin Luther King (1929 1968) Non-violent civil rights leader. Inspired American civil rights movement to achieve
greater equality. Helped to organise the 1963 March on Washington, where he gave famous I have a dream speech.I
have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be
self-evident: that all men are created equal.

Rosa Parks (1913-2005) Civil Rights activist. Started the Montgomery bus boycott (1955) through her refusal to give
up her seat to a white person. She became a prominent spokesperson and figurehead for the American civil rights
movement.
Emily Pankhurst (1858-1928) Suffragette who led campaigns of civil disobedience against a male dominated political
system. Pankhurst was sent to jail on several occasions for her activities.
Susan B. Anthony. American suffragist and campaigner for womens equal rights. Played significant role in women
gaining the vote in US.
Malala Yousafzai (born 1997- )Pakistani schoolgirl who defied threats of the Taliban to campaign for the right to
education. She survived being shot in the head by the Taliban and has become a global advocate for human rights,
womens rights and the right to education. She has sought to emphasis the peaceful nature of Islam and the respect Islam
has for education.
Aung San Suu Kyi (1945 ) Burmese opposition leader. Awarded Nobel peace prize for opposition to military rule.
Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest for many years due to her opposition.
Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845) Prison reform campaigner. Fry was instrumental in raising awareness of the poor conditions
in British prisons and campaigning for more humane conditions.
Roxana Saberi - an American journalist who was arrested in Iran and under pressure and being threatened with a 10-20
year sentence or even execution, falsely confessed to being a spy. She quickly realized this was a mistake and recanted her
confession knowing this would jeopardize her freedom. I learned that maybe other people can hurt my body, maybe
they could imprison me, but I did not need to fear those who hurt my body, because they could not hurt my soul, unless I
let them.
Claudette Colvin - Rosa Parks is well-known for her refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger on a public bus in
Montgomery, Ala., in December 1955. But Parks' civil rights protest did have a precedent: Fifteen-year-old Claudette
Colvin, a student from a black high school in Montgomery, had refused to move from her bus seat nine months earlier.
However, Colvin is not nearly as well-known, and certainly not as celebrated, as Parks.
MUSE - An English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. Their album,The Resistance (2009),

focused on themes of government oppression and uprising, it was mainly inspired byNineteen EightyFour by George Orwell. Their sixth studio album, The 2nd Law (2012) relates to economics, thermodynamics, and
apocalyptic themes. Their latest album, Drones (2015) is a concept album that uses autonomous killing drones as a
metaphor for brainwashing and loss of empathy.
Tupac Amaru Shakur - Shakur began his career as a roadie, backup dancer, and MC for the alternative hip
hop group Digital Underground, eventually branching off as a solo artist.[7][8][9] The themes of most of Shakur's songs
revolved around the violence and hardship in inner cities, racism, and other social problems. Both of his parents and
several other people in his family were members of the Black Panther Party, whose ideals were reflected in his
songs.
