RESIDENT PROFILE

Nick and Joyce Robles

Nick and Joyce have lived in Festival since January
of 2015, having relocated from Ventura County, California. They came to check out Festival in December of 2013 on a whim and immediately made plans
to sell their home in California and retire.
Nick was born in California and enjoyed growing up
in Ventura County, which is known for its farming
communities, particularly for the citrus grown there.
Joyce was born in Brooklyn and moved to California
in 1978.
Nick and Joyce met in 1984 when they both worked
for Rockwell International, which was acquired by
The Boeing Company in 1996. They spent their
careers working with rocket scientists in a business
responsible for designing and manufacturing rocket
engines. Working on the Space Shuttle Program
and the International Space Station, along with the
rockets used to launch most of the satellites we rely
on every day, was a challenging and very rewarding
experience. Nick was a Fire Protection & Security
Manager and an EMT for most of his career, and
Joyce was a Manager for Transportation and later for
the Environmental, Health & Safety organization.

They have both spent

time traveling the
globe, Nick during
his 22 years in the
Navy and Joyce for
work and vacationing.
Although they are fulltime residents,
summer will bring
opportunities for some
travel as they head out
in their travel trailer
with Chula, their
5-year old little black
Dachshund/Terrier mix.
They have four grandchildren back in California,
ranging in age from 2-1/2 to 15 years.
Joyce is learning to quilt, and Nick is enjoying
woodworking.
You might spot them around the community in that
big shinny red Ford truck that is Nicks pride and joy.

Dont Hold The Handles

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S.,

Fitness/Wellness Director

The treadmill is a great piece of exercise equipment. But,

like every other piece of fitness equipment, a treadmill will
yield maximal results only when used correctly. The most
common misuse of the treadmill involves holding the
handles. Regardless of the users age, weight, or goals,
holding the handles on the treadmill significantly reduces
its effectiveness.

Flow Yoga 8:30 am
Aqua Aerobics 10:00 am

Jazzercise 11:45 am
Yoga 5:30 pm

Of importance to many treadmill users is calorie burn. By

holding the handles during treadmill walking, the calorie
burn is reduced by 20-25%. Hands on the
handles provide assistance to keep pace with the belt on
the treadmill. Instead, lower the speed/grade and walk without assistance.
Then, you will be doing all the work necessary without any assistance. In addition, the calories-burned indicator will be more accurate when walking/running hands-free. The estimate of calories burned is based solely on the speed
and grade at which the treadmill runs. It doesnt know if someone is helping
themselves by holding the handles.

Wednesdays
ZUMBA 7:15 am
Pilates 8:20 am (ballroom)
Flow Yoga 8:30 am
Interval Blast 9:45 am
Aqua Aerobics 10:00 am
HIIT 10:45 am
Gentle Fitness 11:45 am
Indoor Cycling 4:00 pm

Holding the treadmill handles does not mimic real walking. When we walk
outside, uphill or on flat, we have nothing to hold and have to do all the work.
Holding the handles with the treadmill at a 10% incline essentially negates
any benefit from walking uphill. The body is leaned back at an angle almost
perpendicular to the angle of the treadmill. At that point, the walking might
just as well be flat. Walking uphill requires leaning forward into the hill. Holding the treadmill handles prevents walking with a natural stride.

Thursdays
S.E.T. 8:00 am
Cardio Burn 9:15 am
Strength, Stretch, Balance 10:30 am
Jazzercise 11:45 am
Equipment Orientation 3:00 pm
Yoga 5:30 pm

Changes to gait and posture are also side-effects of holding treadmill handles.
When holding the handles the stride is shortened to avoid foot contact with
the front cover on the treadmill. Also, holding the handles reduces the work
done by the erector spinae muscles. These muscles work to hold the spine
upright and stable while walking. Holding, or leaning on, the handles can
actually lead to weakening of the erector spinae. And, because holding the
handles, helps keep you stable, balance skills may actually get worse since
they are not consistently and adequately challenged.

Fridays
Flow Yoga 8:00 am
Pilates 8:00 am (ballroom)
ZUMBA 9:15 am
Aqua Aerobics 10:00 am
Axis 10:30 am
Gentle Fitness 11:45 m

When walking, jogging, or running on a treadmill, holding the handles can

actually cause a reduction in the quality of exercise results. Providing assistance, holding the treadmill handles alters the way we walk or run, reduces
the amount of work we do and can actually create injury and muscle weakness. If necessary, reduce the speed and incline so you are able to walk
without assistance of the handles.
