Theme: Language
I plan to show the theme is present in the following character(s) Snowball and Napoleon both are leaders, but
leadership brings difficulty when it comes to the two.

I think that this critics statement supports my

ideas because it shows that

the pigs is their use of language not only to
manipulate the immediate behavior of the animals
through propaganda, emotive language, and
meaningless doubletalk but also to manipulate
history, and thus challenge the nature of actuality
itself. This manipulation, however, is only one
primary means of the pigs control; another,
equally important, is the threat of brute force as
manifested by Napoleons pack of vicious trained
dogs.

May says, What is most demoniacally human

about the pigs is their use of language not only to
manipulate the immediate behavior of the animals
through propaganda, emotive language, and
meaningless doubletalk but also to manipulate
history, and thus challenge the nature of actuality
itself. The animals use of language and speech
brought forth a human characteristic. Not only did
they speak, the pigs took advantage of their
knowledge and became the superior of the farm.
They soon turned into another form of the human
owners. They began to trade with what they
considered the enemy in the beginning of the book.
Regardless of the fact that they were animals they
acted like humans. Throughout the entire book I
dont think they realized that each and every animal
was like a human being because they could read and
write even if it was just the basic or bare minimum
they still held human characteristics.

other animals think he has great depth, which he
does not, and that Snowball, because he talks too
much, is shallow. That, also, is untrue. Like
Snowball, however, Napoleon does share Major's
vision and plan and is willing to work to see the
revolution succeed. The main difference is that
Napoleon has his own agenda for a successful
revolution. Whereas Snowball wants good for all,
Napoleon concentrates on the advantages he can
gain for himself; and whereas Snowball plans
activities out in the open, Napoleon plots secretly,
as when he covertly trains the dogs.

Gillespie and Naden states, Napoleon is a meanlooking boar who doesnt talk much. His quiet
manner makes the other animals think he has great
depth, which he does not, and that Snowball,
because he talks too much, is shallow. This short
text provides evidence that the animals indeed had
communication through speech. They were able to
lead the other animals using knowledge and speech.
Majors vision and plan was presented through
speech. Language is the key to the little bit of
success they had in the rebellion. Without a way of
communication the plan wouldnt have played out
the way that it did. The plan wouldnt have even
been brought to existence because Old Major used
language to communicate with the other animals to
talk about his dream, and discuss his idea to chase
away the humans.

building a windmill that will provide
electrification. Two parties are formed, supporting
Snowball and the three-day week and
Napoleon and the full manger. Meanwhile, the
pigs reserve special privileges for themselves,
such as consuming milk and apples that are not
shared with the others.

Welsh says, Snowball is a brilliant debater and a

visionary who wants to modernize the farm by
building a windmill that will provide
electrification. With those few words it confirms
that the Snowball indeed used language as a way to
convince the other animals to expand and improve
the farm. Snowball uses the knowledge of language
to debate and explain a vision for the animals. An
idea of building a windmill to generate electricity
was told to the other animals by Snowball, but
Napoleon did not agree with Snowballs idea at
first, but as soon as Napoleon was able to chase off
Snowball he made the idea seem as if it was his
own. He manipulated the other animals for his
advantage. He rewrote the history of Animal Farm
to make it seem like Snowball was a rebel and he
was the good guy. The only one who followed
through with Old Majors dream. Indeed Napoleon
did somewhat follow Old Majors dream, he just
had more than a few adjustments.
