AcademicInterventions
WorthingtonSchoolDistrictiscommittedtoacademicexcellenceforallstudents.AsstudentsprogressthroughtheirMiddleSchool
years,academicsbecomemorechallengingascourseworkprogresses.Intheeventthatastudentisstrugglingacademically,
interventions(problemsolvingmechanisms)willbeprovidedthatmayincludeDirectedStudies,ParentMeeting,TeamMeetingswith
CounselorandDifferentiatedclassroominstruction.Intheeventthatstudentsneedmoreintensiveacademicassistance,he/shemaybe
referredtoVoyager,Read180,StudyIsland,Lunchbunch,and/orafterschoolassistance.Studentsmayalsobeplacedinaremedial
interventionclasstohelpincreaseacademicsuccess.

AgendaPlanner/Handbook
TheMiddleSchoolstaffhelpsstudentsdeveloporganizationalskillsthatwillassisttheminbecomingsuccessfulstudentsandproductive
adults.ThestudentAgendaPlannerisdesignedtoassiststudentsinloggingtheirdailyassignments.Theplanneralsohasasectionthat
servesasapassforstudents.Studentsmusthavethissectionfilledoutinordertoleavetheclassroom.Parentsmayusetheplannerto
checkonassignmentsandcommunicatewiththeirchildsteachers.Parentsmaybeaskedtosigntheplannereachweektoindicatethat
theyhavecheckedtheirchildsprogress.Studentsarerequiredtouseandcarrytheagendaplannerthroughouttheschoolday.The
plannerwillbegiventothestudentatthebeginningoftheschoolyear.Additionalplannerswillbesoldatthecostof$5.00.

AttendancePolicy
Pleaserememberyouarerequiredtocontacttheofficebyphone,ornote,statingthereasonforeachabsence.Contacttheschoolabsence
lineat3764174anytimeandleaveavoicemessageorsendanotewithyourchildwhentheyreturntoschool.Iftheschooldoesnot
receiveacall,theschoolwillcalltoverifytheabsence.Ifthereisaconditionthatweshouldbemadeawareofpleasecontacttheschool.
Intheeventanabsenceisnotverifiedbyphone,parentcontact,oranote,theabsencewillbeconsideredunexcused.Studentswith
excessiveabsences,excusedorunexcused,willbeplacedonacontractwhichmayleadtoplacementattheMiddleLevelProgram.

ExcusedAbsences
Examplesofexcusedabsenceswhichareacceptableare:sicknessofthestudent,deathinthestudentsfamily,dental,medicalormental
healthappointments,requiredcourtappearances,religiousholidayobservance,impassableroads,schoolsponsoredactivities,removal
duetosuspension,tripstakenwiththefamily,whenclearedwiththePrincipalsofficebyaparent/guardianbeforetheabsenceoccurs.
Excusesotherthanthoselistedabovemustbeclearedbyadministration.

ExcessiveExcusedAbsences
Studentswithanexcessivenumberofexcusedabsencesarelosingthebenefitofacompleteeducation.Followingistheprocesswewill
followforexcessiveexcusedabsences:
1. After6ExcusedAbsences,aletterwillbesenttoparentsalertingthemtothenumberofdaystheirchildismissingschool.
2. After9ExcusedAbsences,ameetingwillbeheldwiththeAssistantPrincipal,AttendanceOfficer,andthestudentsteam
ofteachers.

Excessiveabsencesmayresultintheschoolrequiringasignedmedicalexcusefromadoctor,gradelevel
retention,involvementofFamilyServices,otheragenciesand/orotherdistrictpersonnel.
PreArrangedAbsences
Parentsorguardiansofastudentwhoknowinadvancetheywillbeabsentforanextendedperiodshouldeithercalltheofficeorprovide
anotewiththedatesoftheintendedabsence.Thisissomakeupworkcanbecompletedbeforetheabsenceoccurs.Theofficewillgive
thestudentaformtobesignedbyeachteacherandreturnedtotheofficethedaypriortodismissal.Wewouldaskthatparentslimitsuch
absencestonomorethan5schooldays.

TardyPolicy
Studentswhoarrivelatetoschool/classaretoreporttotheofficeforatardyslip.Apupilwhoislikelytobetardybecausehe/sheis
detainedbyateacherortheofficeshouldhavetheirplanner/handbooksigned,statingtheteacher/officeisresponsibleforthetardy.

Studentswhoarrivelatetoschoolduetoanunexcusedabsencewillbeconsideredtardy.Studentswhoreach3latetoschooltardieswill
begivendetention.Upona6thtardyameetingbetweenthestudent,parent,andprincipalwillbeheld.Tardinesstoclass3timestardy
willresultinonelunchdetention,6timestardywillresultin3lunchdetentions,9timestardywillresultinafterschooldetentionand
every3timestardyafter9willresultinafterschooldetentionperquarter.

UnexcusedAbsencesTRUANCY
Studentsundertheageof16arerequiredtoattendschoolasrequiredbyMinnesotasCompulsoryAttendanceLaw."Habitualtruant"
meansachildundertheageof16yearswhoisabsentfromattendanceatschoolwithoutlawfulexcuseforoneormoreclassperiodson
sevenschooldaysifthechildisinmiddleschool.120A.22,subdivision8.

Followingistheprocesswewillfollowforunexcusedabsences:
1. Aletterissenttotheparent/guardianafter3unexcusedabsences.Timelostfortruancymaybemadeupindetention.
2. Asecondletterissentafter5unexcusedabsencesschedulingameetingwiththeAssistantPrincipal,DistrictAttendance
Officer,teamofteachers,schoolcounselor,andschoolsocialworker.Togetherwewillcomeupwithaplanforyouandyour
childandsignacontractstatingthatthechildsattendancewillimprove.
3. Whenthestudentreaches7unexcusedabsencesareferralwillbemadetotheNoblesCountyFamilyServiceAgency.

AutomobilesandMopeds
StudentsarenotallowedtodrivetoWorthingtonMiddleSchooleveniftheyare16yearsofage.

BackgroundCheck
Theschooldistrictshallrequirethatapplicantsforschooldistrictpositionswhoreceiveanofferofemploymentandallindividualswho
areofferedtheopportunitytoprovideathleticcoachingservicesorotherextracurricularacademiccoachingservicestotheschooldistrict,
regardlessofwhetheranycompensationispaid,submittoacriminalhistorybackgroundcheck.Theofferofemploymentshallbe
conditioneduponadeterminationbytheschooldistrictthatanapplicantscriminalhistorydoesnotprecludetheapplicantfrom
employmentwiththeschooldistrict.

BehavioralInterventions
WorthingtonSchoolDistrictiscommittedtoahighlevelofpositivebehavioralexpectationsfromallstudents.Intheeventthatastudent
exhibitsinappropriatebehavior,interventions(waystochangethebehavior)maybeimplementedandcaninclude:parentphonecall,
advisorycheckinwithteacher,meetwithschoolsocialworker/counselor,conferencewithprincipal,detention,suspension,
StudentParentContract,and/oraMiddlelevelprogram(housedoffsite).

BicycleRacks
Bikeracksareprovidedforstudentandstaffuse.Pleaselockyourbikeintherack.Bikesarenottoberiddenonschoolpropertybeyond
thelocationoftheracksandarenottobeusedduringtheschoolday.Skateboards,rollerblades,scootersoranyotherwheeleddevices
arenotallowedtoberiddenbeyondthebikeracks.

BookBags
Studentsmaybringmaterialstoschoolinabookbag,butbookbagsmustbeleftinstudentassignedlockers.

BullyingProhibition
Asafeandcivilenvironmentisneededforstudentstolearnandattainhighacademicstandardsandtopromotehealthyhuman
relationships.Bullying,likeotherviolentordisruptivebehavior,isconductthatinterfereswithstudentsabilitytolearnandteachers
abilitytoeducatestudentsinasafeenvironment.Theschooldistrictcannotmonitortheactivitiesofstudentsatalltimesandeliminateall
incidentsofbullyingbetweenstudents,particularlywhenstudentsarenotunderthedirectsupervisionofschoolpersonnel.However,to
theextentsuchconductaffectstheeducationalenvironmentoftheschooldistrictandtherightsandwelfareofitsstudentsandiswithin
thecontroloftheschooldistrictinitsnormaloperations,itistheschooldistrictsintenttopreventbullyingandtotakeactionto
investigate,respond,remediate,anddisciplinethoseactsofbullyingwhichhavenotbeensuccessfullyprevented.Thepurposeofthis
policyistoassisttheschooldistrictinitsgoalofpreventingandrespondingtoactsofbullying,intimidation,violence,andothersimilar
disruptivebehavior.Bullyingmeansanywrittenorverbalexpression,physicalactorgesture,orpatternthereof,byastudentthatis
intendedtocauseorisperceivedascausingdistresstoastudentoragroupofstudentsandwhichsubstantiallyinterfereswithanother
studentsorstudentseducationalbenefits,opportunities,orperformance.
Bullyingincludes,butisnotlimitedto,conductbyastudentagainstanotherstudentoragroupofstudentsthatareasonablepersonunder
thecircumstancesknowsorshouldknow.
Anactofbullying,byeitheranindividualstudentoragroupofstudents,isexpresslyprohibitedonschooldistrictpropertyorat
schoolrelatedfunctions.Thispolicyappliesnotonlytostudentswhodirectlyengageinanactofbullyingbutalsotostudentswho,
bytheirindirectbehavior,condoneorsupportanotherstudentsactofbullying.Thispolicyalsoappliestoanystudentwhose
conductatanytimeorinanyplaceconstitutesbullyingthatinterfereswithorobstructsthemissionoroperationsoftheschool
districtorthesafetyorwelfareofthestudent,otherstudents,oremployees.Themisuseoftechnologyincluding,butnotlimitedto,
teasing,intimidating,defaming,threatening,orterrorizinganotherstudent,teacher,administrator,volunteer,contractor,orother
employeeoftheschooldistrictbysendingorpostingemailmessages,instantmessages,textmessages,digitalpicturesorimages,
orwebsitepostings,includingblogs,alsomayconstituteanactofbullyingregardlessofwhethersuchactsarecommittedonoroff
schooldistrictpropertyand/orwithorwithouttheuseofschooldistrictresources.
Noteacher,administrator,volunteer,contractor,orotheremployeeoftheschooldistrictshallpermit,condone,ortoleratebullying.
Apparentpermissionorconsentbyastudentbeingbullieddoesnotlessentheprohibitionscontainedinthispolicy.
Retaliationagainstavictim,goodfaithreporter,orawitnessofbullyingisprohibited.
Falseaccusationsorreportsofbullyingagainstanotherstudentareprohibited.
Apersonwhoengagesinanactofbullying,reprisal,orfalsereportingofbullyingorpermits,condones,ortoleratesbullyingshall
besubjecttodisciplineforthatactinaccordancewithschooldistrictspoliciesandprocedures.Theschooldistrictmaytakeinto
accountthefollowingfactors:
1. Thedevelopmentalandmaturitylevelsofthepartiesinvolved
2. Thelevelsofharm,surroundingcircumstances,andnatureofthebehavior
3. Pastincidencesorpastorcontinuingpatternsofbehavior
4. Therelationshipbetweenthepartiesinvolvedand
5. Thecontextinwhichtheallegedincidentsoccurred.

Consequencesforstudentswhocommitprohibitedactsofbullyingmayrangefrompositivebehavioralinterventionsuptoand
includingsuspensionand/orexpulsion.Consequencesforemployeeswhopermit,condone,ortoleratebullyingorengageinan
actofreprisalorintentionalfalsereportingofbullyingmayresultindisciplinaryactionuptoandincludingterminationor
discharge.Consequencesforotherindividualsengaginginprohibitedactsofbullyingmayinclude,butnotbelimitedto,
exclusionfromschooldistrictpropertyandeventsand/orterminationofservicesand/orcontracts.
Theschooldistrictwillacttoinvestigateallcomplaintsofbullyingandwilldisciplineortakeappropriateactionagainstanystudent,
teacher,administrator,volunteer,contractor,orotheremployeeoftheschooldistrictwhoisfoundtohaveviolatedthispolicy.

BusBehaviorExpectations
Pupilstransportedinaschoolbusshallbeundertheauthorityofandresponsibletothedriverofthebus.Ridingtheschoolbus,whether
toorfromschoolorrelatedtoanextracurricularactivity,isaprivilegethatcanberevokedforinappropriatebehavior.Studentsare
expectedtofollowthesamestandardsofbehaviorwhileridingabusastheyareinschoolorataschoolsponsoredactivity.Allschool
rulesareineffectwhileastudentiswaitingatabusstoporridingthebus.Continueddisorderlyconductorpersistentrefusaltosubmit
totheauthorityofthedrivershallbesufficientreasonforapupiltobedeniedtransportationinaccordancewiththesepolicies.Thedriver
ofanyschoolbusshallberesponsiblefortheorderlyconductofthepupilstransported.MS121A.59provides,transportationisa
privilegenotarightforaneligiblestudent.

Cafeteria
Inordertomaintainthecafeteria,yourcooperationisnecessary.Youcanmeetthisresponsibilitybyobservingthefollowing
expectations:
Cuttingintothelunchlineisnotpermitted.
Foodorotheritemsarenottobethrown.
Eachindividualstudentisresponsibleforcleaningthetablewherehe/sheeatsandtopickupanyliter.
Eachstudentisexpectedtoremainseatedwhileeating.
Foodisnottobetakenfromthecafeteria.
Studentsmustleavethecafeteriaareawhentheyhavefinishedeating.

CanineInspections
The WMS campusandadjoining areasareroutinelyinspected by Police canines for prohibitedsubstancesand items inorderto providea
saferlearningenvironment.

CellPhones
Cellphonesarenottobecarriedduringtheschoolday.Ifastudentchoosestobringtheircellphonetoschooltheydosoattheirown
risk.Thecellphoneshouldbeturnedoffandstoredintheirlocker.Ifastudentiscarryingorusingtheircellphoneduringtheschoolday,
itwillbeconfiscatedandparentsmaybecontactedtoretrieveit.Phonesareavailableinclassroomsandattheofficewithpermission.

ChangeofAddressandTelephoneNumber
Studentsand/orparents/guardiansaretoreportimmediatelytothemiddleschoolofficeanychangeofaddressorchangeintelephone
number.Thisinformationisveryimportantandneededincaseofemergency,countychange,transportation,etc.

Cheating/Plagiarism
Cheatingistheactofwillfullyobtaining,givingorusingofinformationonatestorassignmentthatdistortsthetrueevaluationofwhata
studentknows,hasachieved,orcandemonstrate.Thisincludestheactofplagiarism.Thefirstoffense,dependingontheirroleofthe
offence,willresultinparentcontact,zerocreditforthetest/assignmentand/ordetention.Thesecondoffensewillresultinzerocreditfor
thetest/assignment,schoolconsequencesandaparentcontact.Thethirdoffensewillleadtogreaterschool/classroomconsequences.

ClassFees
Studentswillnotbechargedfeesforclassrequiredprojects.Feesmaybechargedtostudentswhowanttodospecialprojectsthatarein
additiontoassignedclassroomwork.Astudentmaybechargedfeesfortextbooks,workbooks,andlibrarybooks,lostordestroyedby
thestudent.

You are expected to contribute to an atmosphere in the classroom and media center where you have an opportunity to learn. It is
expectedthatyouwillhaveenoughselfdisciplinetoallowthistohappen.

BE VERBALLY CONSIDERATEYou should show others that their ideas or thoughtsare important,eventhoughyoumight
not agree. Treat others the way you wanttobe treated.Yourattitudeandnonverbalcommunicationshouldsupportthe actions
ofbeingpoliteandshowingcommoncourtesy.

BE PHYSICALLY CONSIDERATETo be physically considerate, you should be considerateofothersin boththe manner in


which you dress and the manner in which you conduct yourself. Clothes appropriateto aschoolenvironmentshouldbeworn.
Your behavior should be apositivereflectiononyou.Gesturesthathavenegative meanings andcause negativefeelingsshould
be avoided. In order to keep our school asafe placeforeveryone,physicalcontact such as fighting andinappropriatetouching
willnotbetolerated.
RESPECT YOURSELF, OTHERS AND PROPERTYYoushouldunderstandthatyouhavevalueasanindividual.Yourown
ideas, beliefs, plans, relationshipswith others,andphysicalwellbeing areimportant.Likewise,youshouldrecognize thevalue
of other students and of adults in our school. You should demonstrate courtesy and regard the individuality of others. The
propertyofothersandtheschoolbuildingitselfshouldbetreatedproperly.
BE PROMPT, PREPARED AND ORGANIZEDWe expect you to arrive at schoolandin your classesontime,which means
before the bell rings.Youshouldhave thenecessarymaterialstocompleteyourdailyassignmentsinan orderlyfashion ineach
class.
STRIVE FOR YOUR BEST ACHIEVEMENTIn order for you to be successful in each of your classes,youwillwantto be
attentiveinclass,anddoyour
assignments regularly. It is important to ask your instructor for help when necessary. If you are absent, make up yourwork by thedue
date establishedbyyourinstructor. Ifyoualways putforththeeffort towork up toyourpotential,youwill findyourhighschool yearsto
beveryrewarding.

Dances
Danceswillbeheldafterschool.Parentsneedtopickuptheirchildrenpromptlywhenthedanceends.Allstudentsmustbepickedup
immediatelyafterthedance.Studentsnotpickedupwithin30minutesoftheendofthedancewillnotbeallowedtoattendthenext
dance.Itistheparent/guardianresponsibilitytoprovidetransportationhomeafterthedance.Inordertoattendthedance,studentsmust
beinattendanceatschoolthedayofthedanceby11:30AM.StudentswhoareinISS/OSSthedayofthedancewillnotbeallowedto
attend.

DirectedStudies
DirectedStudiesisutilizedasastudyhallandregularclassroomrulesandexpectationsaretobefollowed.Studentsaretobeontaskfor
theentireperiodandcreatesomemeasureofproductiveeffort.DirectedStudiesisscheduledoppositeBand/Choir.Studentswhohave
notelectedtoparticipateineitherorbothwillattenddaily.

DirectoryInformation
Independent School District 518, in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act announces that directorytype
information on public school students in the district willbe disseminatedfrom timetotime withoutfurtherauthorizationfrom parentsof

DISTRICTWIDE
STUDENTDISCIPLINEPOLICY&GUIDELINES
Minimum corrective actions for specified violations are described below. Because it is not possible to list every behavior or
conduct problem, the school administration has the discretion and latitude to amend consequences as appropriate to the
situation. Consequences may be altered as administration considers a students intent, track record or frequency of violations,

attitude or response to the intervention and willingnesstocorrect the behavior. Buildingleveladministrationalsomayimposea


110 day suspension* as deemed appropriate for various violations of district policy (*the superintendent may extend a
suspension for an additional 110 days depending on the seriousness of the violation). Pursuant to MN Statues 121A.65, the
school district discipline policy was reviewed with staff, the school board, parents and students via various forms of
communication.

The following sanctions apply to studentsinK12and thedevelopmentallevelofthechildwill betakeninto considerationatthe timeof


the violation. The corrective actions are not sequentially ordered. Students may be subject to disciplinary action for conduct on oroff
school property which has a direct and immediate effectonthediscipline or thegeneral welfare of theschool. Thispolicyisparticularly
applicable where disciplinary action is reasonable necessary for thephysicaloremotionalsafetyofthe student,teachers, or otherschool
personnel, or for the safety of school property. Violations of this policyduring times of emergencies mayresultinincreased/additional
consequences. The district will follow Due Process laws and make each disciplinary action, an educational opportunity, as applicable.

DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY *****:


Willful damage of school property willfully cuts,
defaces, or otherwise injures in any way any
property, real or personal, belonging to the school

boisterous and noisy conduct tending to arouse

Administrative judgment will determine the

ELECTRONIC DEVICES *: Objectswhichcause


distractions,suchaspagers, radios,headsets, cellular
telephones, MP3s, universal remote controls and
laser pointers. These items will be retained by the
schoolwhenfoundpresentonschoolproperty.

FIGHTING*****:
Fighting
shall

characterized by a violent aggressive behavior by

follow an appropriate direction given by a staff

INTERFERENCE/OBSTRUCTION

Interference or obstruction means any actions
taken to attempt to prevent a staff member from

VIOLATION

Internet usage is a privilege. Itistobe used onlyfor
legitimate education purposes. The following types
of misuse may result in loss of privilege to use and
otherpossibleconsequences:
Harassment of othersinan obscene,derogatory
or other offensive manner. This could include
sending sexually explicit orraciallyand gender
inappropriate jokes, messages, etc. Threats
againstotherswouldalsofallintothiscategory.
Plagiarismofmaterials.
Violationofcopyrightedworksortrademarks.
Transmission of personal information about

Disruption of the network or programs

Downloadingobscene/pornographicmaterials.
Free speech in student use of the Internet is limited
in the same way that it is limited in school
newspapers. Supervisors can limit student access.
Parent permission is needed to restrict any Internet
access.

LEAVING WITHOUT PERMISSION *: This


applies to leaving the school building and grounds
during school hours without signing out or having
permission from school personnel. This could be
consideredtruancy.

MISREPRESENTING OF FACTS/LYING *:
Students who knowingly falsify or misrepresent
information. This includes knowingly withholding
information relative to violation of the discipline
policyinvolvingotherstudents.

NUISANCE ITEMS *: Students are prohibited


from possessions or use of articles that are
nuisances, illegal distractions, or that may cause
harm to persons or property at school and
schoolsponsored activities. Examples of nuisance
items include, but are not limited to lasers, yoyos,
walkmans,backpacks,stinkbombs,etc.

PARKING/DRIVING *****: Driving, Careless


or Reckless driving on school property in such a
manner as to endanger personsorproperty. Driving
of any motorized vehicles is permitted by high
school and ALC students only not middle school
students.

DetentionA teacher, principal, ordesigneemay detainapupilafterschoolforcorrectionoraviolation,includingtardinesstoclass. Any


pupil who is told by a teacher to report after school and who,forany reasoncannotreport, mustfirstclear theabsencewith theteacher,
principal,ordesignatedrepresentative.

ExclusionExclusion means an action taken by the school board to prevent enrollment or reenrollmentforastudentforaperiodthat
shall not exceed beyond the school year. The Pupil Fair Dismissal Act of 1998 (as amended) will be followedin proceduralmattersof
this kind. Exclusion of students with disabilities cannot be used as a discipline measure if the actions may have been the result of the
disability. Special provisions for dealing with the behavior of a student with a disability will be written into the students Individual
EducationProgram.

ExpulsionExpulsion means a school board action to prohibit an enrolled pupil from further attendance for up to12monthsfrom the
datethepupilisexpelled.

Referral to Law EnforcementIf astudentsmisbehavior is that inwhicha lawviolation maybe involved, juvenileauthoritiesorpolice

juvenileauthoritiesorpolicearecalled.

Removal From ClassRemoval from Class and removal means any action taken by teacher, principal, or other school district
employee to prohibit apupilfromattendingclassfora periodoftime nottoexceed three classoractivityperiods,pursuant toprocedures
established in the school district Permanent Removal meansthe actiontakenbyaprincipaltoprohibita studentfrom attendinga class
periodoractivityperiodfortheremainderofthequarter/trimester/semester/year.

RestitutionA general concept that entails repairing the damage that has been done. This alternative consequence may includeactions
likeapologies,cleaningupmess,payingfordamages,etc.

SuspensionAn action by the school administration prohibiting a pupil from attending school for a period of no more than ten school
days. If a suspension is longer than five days, the suspending administrator mustprovide thesuperintendentwitha reasonforthe longer
