Elevator Interior Design Should Perform

at Every Level
by Karen Tullis

Few areas within a building are as highly visible, highly

trafficked, and subject to the resultant scrutiny and abuse as an
elevator interior. As a destination through which almost every
visitor must pass, no other part of a building entertains such a
captive audience, or has the opportunity to communicate so
much.

A Winning Personality
While a buildings exterior reflects the personality of the
businesses and tenants within, so, too, does the look and feel of
an elevator interior, which creates an immediate first impression
and shapes a visitors overall experience within a space.
In its role transporting people throughout a property, a cabs
interior design must align with the potentially diverse
personalities of the areas it serves. It must visually represent the
floors above and below. And, it must do so without sacrificing
functionality at any stop.

Materials Matter
Its a tall order, but materials and finishes can play a key role.
On the one hand, they establish the visual personality of a
cab. Different materials can reflect different architectural styles,
sophistication levels or purposes. They can help orient users to a
buildings various zones. They can even entertain, inform or
inspire.
On the other hand, they can help ensure a cabs efficient
operation, and have a positive impact on the buildings bottom
line. Lightweight materials and LEDs help reduce energy

consumption. Materials with low- or no-VOCs improve air

quality. And, those with high-recycled content and high
recyclability improve life overall.
The right materials can handle large volumes of people and
their equipment or belongings; meet applicable code
requirements; require minimal maintenance; perform well over
time; and accomplish all this at a realistic price point.
Fortunately, the options are extensive. Far beyond what they
were several years ago, todays material choices offer
tremendous creative and functional advantages, without
necessarily boosting costs.
Stainless steel, plastic laminates, and wood veneer remain
popular, thanks to their proven ability to meet a wide range of
visual and budgetary criteria. But newer materials, like
architectural glass, have increasing appeal as well, especially
those that are lightweight, easily customizable, and/or have
added functionalities or benefits.

A Systematic Approach
Elevator interior systems that blend the convenience of a
standardized program with full design flexibility make it easy
and cost-efficient to tailor a cab interior to project-specific
needs. The best systems work with the broad array of materials
on the market today. They invite creativity. And, they address
the mechanical details, like trim pieces and wall panel
attachment assemblies, while reducing design, engineering and
installation time and costs.

Suppliers Matter
While all materials have inherent advantages, expertise and
manufacturing capabilities vary greatly from one vendor to the
next. The right supplier can offer tremendous peace of mind,
with quality materials and systems, quick delivery times, and an
in-depth understanding of the construction process.

An Exciting Challenge
Elevator cab interiors can be a visually exciting aspect of any
building, and one with tremendous potential for enhancing the
personality of a space. Theres no doubt that balancing a cabs
aesthetic and functional demands is an ongoing challenge. But
with the myriad materials and finishes available today,
addressing these challenges should be nothing less than an
uplifting prospect.

Lately, weve been seeing some interesting

designs come from Man-D-Tec, Inc. They have
shown that LEDs are here to stay, and continually
introduce new lighting products to the elevator
industry. Traditionally, lighting designs are
round, but the new S2Beam and aeRoBeam
bring a square and rectangular design to light.
Featuring TrueSquare technology, Man-D-Tec
has launched their new S2Beam square LED
fixtures. Each fixture provides 262 lumens of
delivered light, which is efficient from just 4
watts of LED output. Unlike many other fixtures
that adapt a square trim to a round fixture, this is
truly a square design for maximum output.
For those needing even more punch, Man-DTec has now launched a rectangular LED fixture
as well. The aeRoBeam is a unique rectangular
design boasting an output of 573 delivered
lumens per fixture. This is an astounding feat,
accomplished with just 6 watts of LED output.
This is one of the most efficient lighting fixtures
offered by Man-D-Tec, with an impressive 90.4
lumens per watt.
To determine how many of each of these lights
would be appropriate for your new or existing
cab, you can go online to the Lighting Design

MPCARevolution
MP Lifts launches a new range of products.

by Hani Saliba
The MPCARevolution range by MP Lifts
involves important car improvements, both
aesthetically (with a complete makeover of the
car image) and structurally (achieving easier
installation and maintenance). The product is
fully customizable, allowing the selection of
different models of wall panels, mirrors,
handrails, lighting, operating panels, etc. In
addition, MP offers the possibility to insert a
solid color or picture (provided by MP or its
client) on wall or operating panels, with the MP
Ambientum and Fusion Unike ranges,
respectively. The companys intention is for its
new car to suit any market on the five continents
where it is present.
MPCARevolution includes new finishes in
wall panels, providing aesthetic improvement by
using materials with new textures. Structurally,
new elements have been incorporated to reduce
the panels thickness and weight. New lighting
concepts using LED technology diffuse the light
over the entire ceiling surface. In addition, other
lighting concepts have been included to enhance
performance and significantly reduce energy
consumption.
The MP Fusion car operating panel consists
of two parts: a stylized external frame and a
customizable central part. This front part allows
full customization by means of digital
overprinting. The MP Impulse push button is
also available, which can have an aesthetic
impact. Finally, the MP Display offers
interaction with the passenger.
MP conducted a lifecycle analysis on the
MPCARevolution as part of its ecological

design. Complying with ISO 14040-14044

standards (for compulsory stages) and CML2001 and Eco-Indicator 99 (for optional stages),

It is vital to know that an elevator car does not

only create a tone to compliment the home or
building, but it also provides a structural
foundation for safety and elevator reliability.
A+ Woodwork & Design takes great pride in
providing high quality elevator components and
car interiors. There are no shortcuts to a high
quality, beautifully finished elevator. Each car
that leaves their factory is fully finished and
assembled and is carefully inspected for quality.
A+ says, We work with the architect and/or
elevator contractor from the beginning stages of
the plans so the elevator is a focal point and an
essential part of the home or building rather
than an afterthought. The industry-standard is to
use a laminate product as the finished surface in
the car interior. Although we offer a line of
similar products, in most cases, our interiors are
100% hardwood. Our cabs are shipped with all
finish work complete including custom trim
and stain to match the hardwood profiles and
dcor of the home or building.
A+ discourages the purchase of unfinished
elevator cars. Finishing the car onsite is typically
more expensive than finishing in a facilitys
controlled environment. Stain and finish work
applied on site will settle due to heat/cold
expansion, thus, you are guaranteed to have
touchup work. A+ fully finishes in their facility,
negating the need for onsite finish work, which
is both costly and lackluster.

Future T710 and T310

To further satisfy market and customer needs
for more specific products KLEEMANN has
developed 3 different lines of cabins. The names
clearly describe their content and purpose. The
Classic, Modern and Future lines can cover a
wide range of tastes, tendencies and budgets.
Key representatives for the Future Line are the
T710 and T310 models that are designed in
collaboration with an internationally known
automotive designer, Andreas Zapatinas whose
experience spans long working projects with top
manufacturers worldwide. These cabins are truly
unique; the characteristic curved vertical walls
offer a memorable experience to the elevator
passengers. The interior space is now more
inviting and a warmer relationship with the
user is created since the elevator cabin has finally
been liberated from the hard box shape that has
been the main offer for decades. Now the
passenger may touch or comfortably lean on the
walls or simply for few moments have a new
experience in a space that is moving vertically
and is more related to the human curves rather
than the cold hard edged box. These cabins
guarantee a series of sensations and the wide
range of material choices complete the overall
package. A true breakthrough that has been
evolved applying high standards of material and
assembly quality tested at the KLEEMANN
manufacturing facilities.

T110 and T120

The latest additions to the Future family of
cabins are the models T110 and T120 specifically
designed to satisfy the need for something fresh
and clearly innovative. On the T110 the led
lighting used offers energy savings and at the
same time creates a high precision quality look
to the cabin environment. Two illuminated
bands run from the edges of the ceiling
continuously through the frontal vertical mirror
wall, all the way to the cabins floor. The
longitudinal dimension of the cabin is
emphasized and the high tech sensation of the
illuminated dots completes the composition. The
T120 is the answer to the need for a futuristic
looking cabin that is offered to the lower budget
conscious customer. The simple lines give the
sense of tranquility and relaxation. The dotted
illuminated ceiling is the main theme and recalls
a star studded sky while the pleasant vertical
wall material and color complete the freshness
of the design.Created with the collaboration that
KLEEMANN has for years with Andreas Zapatinas,
both cabin projects were developed at the
KLEEMANN design and manufacturing facilities.
During their development phase the cabins have
gone through a carefully monitored process that
can assure high quality results in terms of perfect
fitting and assembly resulting in excellent
control of tolerances and gaps.

KLEEMANN Future Trend

Buttons-Operating Panels

Commons Series Fixtures

Future Trend Buttons-Operating Panels

The design philosophy of the main cabin
architecture now is more complete with the
introduction to the market of a series of new
buttons and operating panels. In the recent past
KLEEMANN has already included two series of
buttons that completed their BLUE LINE full
product package. Now again in collaboration
with Andreas Zapatinas a complete set of
operating panels and buttons are presented. The
buttons are distinguished since they are clearly
inspired from the automotive design culture.
Here the interaction of the user is paramount
and the ergonomic qualities are not only purely
functional but visual as well. It is not only the
tactile sensation that counts but the actual
shape itself is more human, or better, finger
friendly. All resulting in a dynamic shape not
commonly used in similar products. The
operating panels are produced in piano black
finish, the same often used in automotive
dashboards and interior panels. They are
sculptured using simple elegant curves and
become the base where the jewel- like new
buttons are fitted. The large size panels are
studied to allow easy access to the electronic
components a necessity for quality maintenance.
A new combination of technology and art that
KLEEMANN believes will still reinforce its
dynamic position at the forefront of design in
the elevator industry.
