Election

Election is the eternal act of God where he is the sovereign and chooses a certain number
of men to be the recipients of special grace and eternal life (Lewis Berkhof). If God only chooses
a certain number of people, where does everyone stand in the election; how do we know that we
are chosen? God is just, he is loving and perfect, and making that decision is in his hands and
mind only. This paper isnt about the answer to who is chosen, it is about how we can get a better
understanding to find comfort in the words of the Bible. The word election can either haunt or
comfort us in our times when we think alone at night.
God is the sovereign; God is the almighty. God is perfect and he doesnt criticize us even
though we are not perfect. We sin but in Ephesians 1:4-10, the Holy Spirit accepts and forgives
us the way we are. He chose us that we would be with Christ; he adopted us as his children. He
brought us all out of slavery and this mystery, the whole concept is slowly coming together.
God comforts us in our madness in Romans 8: 28-30 with the words of, All things work
together for good to those who love God. In the time when we question God on who will be
elected, those words reassure us.
During creation, God created all of us to have free will. We all make our own decisions;
God doesnt override us with his power. Since we have free will, there are temptations that Satan
throws at us that will lead us away from God. Satan throws thoughts in our heads that question
our faith, that question if God exists. In 1 Peter 2: 4-10 the bible gives a good analogy of the
living stone. As we come to God (the living stone) it is rejected by humans but God sees the
stone as precious. We will live like the living stones, but those who dont believe will stumble on
the rock and will fall. They stumble because they disobey the message that it is giving; but those
who believe will receive mercy.

Election
Election solely relies on who you are as a person, what you believe in and either use
Gods word to comfort you or distress you. God speaks of election because he wants to choose
all of us to come with him, but since we have free will we make our decision. Even though we
question God in our times of hardship that is when we need to believe in him the most. The
choice of election isnt in Gods hands; it is in our hands because we decide our fate. Relying on
God is so simple and easy that we over think it sometimes; relying and believing in him is as real
as a rock; the rock is plain and simple but thats all it takes for God to love us and believe in us.
