Class Description and Objectives

The goal of this course, as described by the Utah State Office of Education Secondary
Dance is that students will understand: Dance is a universal language, an expressive
and vibrant art with the capacity to unify the physical, mental, social, emotional,
aesthetic, and spiritual aspects of the human being.
This dance course is provided to give students a greater awareness and understanding of
their own bodies. Students will explore technical, performance, choreography, and
aspects of dance while gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of dance as an
art form. Students will lean about many different aspect of dance including kinesiology,
history, improvisation, and multiple dance genres.

Class Materials:

Students will be provided a class folder.

Class Requirements:

1. Show Respect: for ourselves, each other, and the space we work in.
2. Students must actively participate in class each day.
3. Students must dress out for class. Any active wear, such as; sweat pants, yoga
pants, t-shirts, and tank tops; is acceptable. No jeans and no socks allowed.
4. No gum or drinks (other than water), allowed in the dance room.
5. Tardies: Students are to dress in the locker rooms. You will have 3 minutes after the
bell to be changed. You will then quietly walk upstairs, take off your shoes and
socks, and wait in a line to enter the dance room. We will greet each other by
name at the door and then proceed to block formation.
6. No profanity.

Class Assignments:

1. Participation: Given that dance is an active art, it is of the upmost importance that
students are participating to the best of their abilities to gain something from the
class.
2. Folder: Students will keep a folder for this class. Students will be given 5 minutes
at the beginning of every class period to record notes, vocabulary words, answer
questions, or reflect on a dance piece.
3. Tests and Quizzes: Occasionally there will be movement assessments and quizzes
that will test on concepts we are working in class.

Grading Procedures

Grades are based on the accumulation of points for both class work and projects. Grades
will be updated on Monday. The grade scale is as follows:
A 90-100%: (excellent work)
B 80-89%: ( good work)
C 70-79%:
(average/satisfactory work)
D 60-69%: (unsatisfactory)
F 59% or below: (failing)
