The Plan

Maddi, Kara, and Gisela

About Us
We are a group of seniors in the Academy for
Global Studies at Austin High. Our task is to
design and carry out a service project
focused on an issue with local and global
implications.
We chose to focus on the lack of access to
experiences outside of the classroom. All of
us have been fortunate enough to learn the
positive impact learning outside the
classroom has on students, so we wanted
help spread this awareness.

Target Group
We are targeting students from Title 1 schools,
like Perez Elementary.
Schools with 40% of their students from lowincome families are eligible to receive Title 1
funds. These funds are used to develop and
sustain school programs aimed at improving
academic achievement.
90% of students at Perez Elementary are on
free or reduced lunch.

Our Goal
Have a day of learning and fun out on

Town Lake with the children of Perez

Elementary.
Help kids learn how to have fun outside

and how to continue to involve nature in

their lives.

The Day

April 9th

8:20 a.m. meeting at Perez Elementary

Load buses and head to Town Lake

Upon arrival, the children will be split into two groups

One group will be briefed on canoe behavior and

after will continue to go out on the canoes. The other
group will have a lesson guided by the Austin Wildlife
Center.

Lesson will include a talk given by the Austin Wildlife

Center about endangered animals and their ecosystems

Snacks will be provided

Trash cleanup may be included in lesson and experience

Halfway through the day (about 1 hours), groups will

switch activities

Training Day
April 2nd

Volunteers will arrive at Zilker by 10 a.m.

Volunteers will be taken through the day step

by step, and the instructions they will be
giving the kids.

We will inform volunteers on expectations on

disciplining the children, if needed, as well as

their dress code on the day

Maybe get a t-shirt for all volunteers?

Service hours will be given to the volunteers

for their time on training day and the actual

event.

Getting Volunteers

We will ask English teachers to inform their

students of this opportunity to volunteer. We will
ask the teachers to give interested students our
contact information so we can create a volunteer
list.

We will also contact Ms. Attra because of her

involvement with National Honor Society.

We will take volunteers from any grade at Austin

High and expect to need anywhere from 15 to 20
depending on the amount of children expected to
attend. The more volunteers we get, the more
students we can bring. Were planning on a 1 to 5
ratio of volunteers to students.

Teachers will also be invited to volunteer, if they

are interested.
