doing and/or saying:
The child listened to the teacher read a story (c)
The child answered questions about the story (L) (C)
Then the child said his birthday out loud (L)
Next the child went to play in dramatic play (SE)
Child sat back quietly while others played at first (SE)
Child then joined in with the others and put on dress up
clothes (GM)
A few minutes later the child then decided that he
wanted to color (C)
Child asked me to color with him (L)
Child then asked me to write my name on the paper (L)
Then the child decided to trace my name (FM)
After the child traced my name he tried writing the
letters on his own (FM)
The child then drew a sun on the paper (FM)
Last the child asked me to take the picture home with me

and the child: Child paid close attention to his teacher, when
the teacher asked questions on the book that they read in
circle time Hunter gave answers, while Hunter was playing in
centers he looked to see where his teacher was several times.

children:

Hunter began to talk to the other children in the dramatic play


center as he was putting on dress up clothes, but I was not
able to hear what he was telling them.

1. What did I learn about the childs development from todays
observation?
I learned that the child is developing appropriately for his age,
but I did notice that the child was not very social like some of
the other children. Hunter took some time before he would join
in and talk with the other children in the dramatic play area. I
also learned that hunters fine motor development is advanced
because he could easily trace, and then try and write my name
on his own, he could also draw a sun without any problems.
2. What should I focus on the next time I observe this child?
The next time that I observe Hunter I will focus on more on his
language and communication skills, because I want to hear and
see how he interacts with his peers.
3. What questions do I have regarding the childs development
and learning?
I want to ask the teacher how Hunter communicates with
others or if he is always shy.
I would like to ask the teacher what interests Hunter.
I would also like to ask who Hunter plays with often, and if he
has any siblings.

The child sang along to their good morning song (L)
The child answered questions about his age and birthday
before he chose his center (L/C)
The child chose to play with play dough (C)
The child began cutting pieces of play dough with their
child proofed scissors (FM)
The child cut a triangle piece of play dough, and said, I
made a slice of pizza. (FM) (L) (SE)
The child asked me, What kind of food would you like me
to make you? (L)
I told the child to make me a cookie, and he cut a circular
piece of play dough and said, Here is your chocolate chip
cookie. (FM) (L) (SE)
Some other children joined the child and he began
interacting with the other children (L)
The child then decided to play in the block area (C)
The child put some blocks together and made a ramp to
push cars on (FM)
The child began to push his cars up and down his play
ramp (FM)
The child was telling the other children in the block area
that he loved cars (L)
The child asked me, Do you like playing cars? (L)
The child continued to play in the block area with his
other peers for the remainder of my observation time
(SE)

and the child: The child followed his teachers directions on
singing their good morning song during their circle time. The
child quickly answered his teachers questions about his age
and birthday so he could choose a center for his free playtime.
Hunter also looked at his teacher often when he was making
his pretend play food out of play dough.

children:
The child interacted and talked with the other children that
decided to play with the play dough with him. Hunted then
talked with his other peers in the block area, and there he
began to explain to his other friends that he loved cars.

4. What did I learn about the childs development from todays
observation?
Today I learned that Hunter has well developed language skills
as well as an interesting imagination. I learned that the child
was able to interact and communicate with the other children
that were in each of the centers that he chose to spend his
free playtime in. I also learned that the child had an
outstanding imagination as well as developed fine motor skills
when he was playing and cutting the play dough pieces and he
was imagining that the play dough was pizza and a chocolate
chip cookie. I also learned that the child was able to
communicate with the other children and he was able to
explain to the other children that he loved to play with cars,
when he was in the block area.
5. What should I focus on the next time I observe this child?
The next time I observe Hunter I would like to observe him
when they are having free play time outdoors and I would like
to see how he plays with his other friends in the outside play
area. I would like to see what activities the child engages in
when playing outdoors, and how developed his gross motor
skills are.
6. What questions do I have regarding the childs development
and learning?
I want to ask the teacher about Hunters ability to easily make
friends in each center that he chooses to play in, if that is
normal or did he only do that today because I was in the
classroom?
I want to ask the teacher about Hunters activity level when
playing in a big open space such as, outdoors.
I would also like to ask the teacher about how Hunters gross
motor skills were.

The child jumped up and down to the ABC song (GM)
The child sang the ABC song (L)
The child began to hit his other classmates that were

The child talked while his teacher was talking (L)
The child tried writing the words Mrs. Knowlin had on the

The child decided to write his name on the left hand top
corner of his paper (FM)
The child began to cry when he could not participate in
center time (SE)
The child begged Mrs. Knowlin to let him play with his
peers (SE)
The child sat on the circle time rug crying and
whimpering because he could not join in during free play
time (SE)

teacher(s)/adult(s) and the child:
The child did not follow Mrs. Knowlins directions during circle
time. The child wanted to talk while she was talking and hit on
his peers. Mrs. Knowlin called Hunter down several times, but
he would not listen to her. The child continued to misbehave,
Mrs. Knowlin instructed Hunter to write his name on the top
right hand corner of his paper and he wrote his name on the
left. When it was center time Mrs. Knowlin made Hunter sit on
the circle time rug and not participate in free play because of
his behavior. Hunter was very upset and cried out loud the
entire time that his other classmates were enjoying free
playtime.

The child was not very social with his peers this day; he tried
to hit some of his classmates during their circle time. While
Mrs. Knowlin was talking during their learning time Hunter
continued to talk to one of his classmates.

7. What did I learn about the childs development from todays
observation?
Today I learned that Hunter was going through a very
emotional day. I saw the child get very feisty with some of his
classmates, and also his teacher. I also saw that when Hunter
was not able to play during center time that he became very
upset.
8. What should I focus on the next time I observe this child?
I should focus on Hunters social and emotional development
the next time that I observe him, because from this
observation I saw that he could not handle his emotions or
feelings very well on his own.
9. What questions do I have regarding the childs development
and learning?
I want to ask the teacher if Hunter often displays this type of
behavior?
I want to ask the teacher if Hunter normally has a hard time
following instructions on his own.
I also want to ask the teacher if Hunter often feels the need to
hurt his peers that are sitting next to him.
I would also like to ask the teacher if Hunter normally cries out
loud if he does not get his way during class.

different play areas (C)
Child asked a little girl to play in the kitchen area with
him (L)
Child began to play in the kitchen area, and asked me,
Would you like me to make you some food? (L)
Child then asked, What is your favorite kind of juice?

Child said, My favorite juice is orange, and thats my
favorite color. (L) (C)
Child then saw his two boys playing in blocks and he
decided thats where he wanted to go (C)
Child asked the other boys if he could play in the block
area with them (L)
Child began to stacking blocks (FM)
Child then said, This is an Xbox, and these blocks are
the remote controls. (L) (C)
Child talked with the other two boys about the games
they were playing (L)
Child then asked me, Will you call my momma? (SE) (L)

Note significant interactions between the
teacher(s)/adult(s) and the child: The child paid very close
attention to Mrs. Knowlin during circle time when she was
explaining to children what families are. When asked how
many members was in his household Hunter told Mrs. Knowlin
that there was four members. He explained his family
members to Mrs. Knowlin and then allowed the other children
to talk. When it was center time Hunter did not fuss he quickly
got his center card and began searching for a center to play in.

children:
The child was not shy today when it was circle time he quickly
asked one of the girls in his class if they would like to play
kitchen with him. Him and the girl communicated with each
other as he would come and ask me what I would like to eat

and drink. Hunter and the girl talked about their favorite juice
to drink. Hunter then decided to ask two other boys in his class
if he could play in the block area with them. Once hunter was
comfortable in that area he began stacking blocks, and he told
the other boys that he was making an Xbox and that the other
smaller blocks were going to be the remote controls, he then
talked with the other boys about the games that they were
playing.

What did I learn about the childs development from
todays observation?
Today I learned that the child is becoming more advanced in
his language skills when communicating with his class peers. I
also learned that the child is becoming quicker with his
cognitive skills because he is thinking faster than the times
before. I also learned that the child has an advanced
imagination for his age.

What should I focus on the next time I observe this child?
The next time that I observe Hunter I want to focus more on
his language skills to see where he is when speaking one on
one. I want to see if Hunter will communicate clearly as he did
today when talking to his peers or if he is less social when
talking with adults.
3.What questions do I have regarding the childs development
and learning?
I want to ask the teacher what made Hunters attitude and behavior
change so quickly from my last observation.
I want to ask the teacher if Hunter often talks about his family
members with the class.
I also want to ask the teacher if hunter often goes to the kitchen
center as his first choice.
I would also like to ask the teacher about Hunters imagination and
if he comes up with games often on his own.
