Lesson 1: Learning About Matter

As an introduction to this unit I will use a "Thinglink. Each of the tags will include facts on the
three states of matter. After the introduction PowerPoint slides on Matter will be introduced
which will discuss in further detail the main components of Matter. As a result, students will be
able to identify objects by volume, mass and properties. For the group activity students will be
paired into groups of fours and given a worksheet in which they will identify different objects by
describing them by volume, mass and properties. Afterwards, I will ask each group to present
their results to the rest of the class and how they obtained their results. As a closure to the lesson,
I will break up the students into three groups and give each group a piece of construction paper
with an index card that either has a solid, liquid or gas property. I will ask each group to draw
what their image looks like by drawing particles within the image to illustrate the difference
between solid, liquid or gas Matter. Then, each group will have an opportunity to describe their
image to the rest of the class by utilizing the academic language they learned in the lesson.
