AMA1133 Orchestration

2015-2016 Semester Short Semester (E152S), Assignment 1

30 Marks (30% of final grade)
Task:
You are to orchestrate a four-part piece of music for string orchestra.
Option 1:
Choose one of the 1 4-part arrangement of a popular song provided and follow the guidelines in the arrangement
Option 2:
Compose your own 4-part new piece or arrangement of at least 8 bars.
It must have a melody, 2 harmony parts, and a bass line.
The piece must:
If one person:
contain at least two (2) times through the piece
of music (like 2 verses with different
orchestrations)
contain at least four (4) different examples of
orchestration

If two people:
contain at least three (3) times through the piece
of music (like 3 verses with different
orchestrations)
contain at least eight (8) different examples of
orchestration

Example of orchestration: Hollywood style where Soprano, Alto, and Tenor are placed in the Violin I,Violin II,
and Viola, with the parts divisi)

These can either be covered in class, or orchestrations you create


In each orchestration, label above the score:
the number of the orchestration example above Violin I
Above each part in each orchestration example, where the part originated, and changes from the original
(only when there is a change)

example, above Violin I staff of Hollywood style: Soprano, doubled up octave


The notes of the melody must be the same as the original (except for occasional, very small changes discussed in
class)

Correctness

The orchestrations are correct and correctly labeled.


The notes of the melody have not been changed and given proper focus.
The inner voices are distributed evenly.
The bass line is balanced between cello and double bass.

Creativity

There are distinct differences between the examples of orchestration using


dynamics and articulations.

Layout

The title, composer, and orchestrator are on the score.


The instruments are in order.
There are no collisions between notes/articulations/expressions/etc.

Lateness

-1 per weekday
