Poison Gas

U-boats

Automatic Machine Gun

A poisonous gas is a liquid or a solid giving off

deadly vapors that were designed (mainly for
chemical warfare) to kill, injure, or disable people
when inhaled. Poison gas was first used by the
Germans in Belgium completely destroying a large
number of the allied soldiers. Poison gas was a
new and efficient way to kill mass amounts of
people in the time of modern warfare.

A U-boat is a German submarine that was used

widely during World War One as substitutes for
surface commerce raiders. The success of the
German submarines during World War One had
been revolutionary and at the end of the war, those
U-boats that had survived were surrendered to the
Allies. Although there were only 38 U-boats at the
time, they were very successful.

A machine gun is a fully automatic mounted or

portable firearm, that was designed to fire bullets
powerfully and quickly. The gun was first offered to
Britain by Hiram Maxim who had designed it at the
beginning of World War One. Soon after he offered it
to them, officers of the war deemed the guns as an
improper form of warfare. The British and french had
access to several machine guns when the war began.

Airplanes

Zeppelins
A zeppelin is a type of airship named after the
German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin who
pioneered the airship development in the 20th
century. It was able to revolutionize the way of
flight and was much more accurate than balloons
that had been used prior to WW1. The zeppelin
was used by both the Germans and the Allies
during World War I, however the Germans made
far more extensive use of the airships and were
able to use them more efficiently and frequently
than others.

Convoys
A convoy is a group of ships or vehicles traveling
together, usually accompanied by armed troops, or
other vehicles to protect them. The thought behind a
convoy was that they would be able to escort ships
hauling passengers or cargo. Before the convoy
system was in place, the British navy suffered massive
losses at the hands of German U-boats. These ships
traveled in a zig zag pattern to confuse enemy ships,
once they were closer to ports they were joined by
destroyer fleets for protection.

An airplane is a powered flying vehicle with fixed

wings and a weight greater than that of the air it
displaces. At the beginning of World War One
aircraft was very basic and not the most efficient. As
time went on and technology progressed, aircraft
had become far more sophisticated and had
differentiated into fighters, bombers and long-range
bombers. The British were some of the first to put
the airplane to use, in fact, at the start of the war in
August 1914, British airmen were part of the British
Army and commissioned officers had army ranks.
People started realize that not only could airplanes
be useful but they could even influence an outcome
of the war greatly. Soon the war was filled with
blimps, planes, and tethered balloons.
