What is Dengue Fever ?

Definition: It is a mosquito
borne-disease which
occurs in tropical and
subtropical regions of the
world. Dengue can cause
a sudden fever, a rash,
and/or muscle and joint
pain[1].

What causes Dengue

This disease is spread
fever?
by a mosquito.
Usually carried by
an infected female
Aedes mosquito,
stored in their
salivary gland and
ejected during its
blood transfer
between the host.

Why do they need to

Both genders of the

nectars, fruit juices and
other plants However,
the female feeds on
humans and animals
blood when the mosquito
is pregnant with eggs
developing in its ovaries.

Contraction

Contraction Cycle
According to WHO (World Health Organization), 390 million people contracted dengue
each year, 500,000 of this cases turned into dengue hemorrhagic fever and in result
25,000 people died annually worldwide.
Dengue fever could easily be contracted anywhere, from rural to urban areas due to
open water sources and poor sanitation.

Dengue Hemorrhagic
Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever
fever
happens later on, when
dengue fever gets more
severe or acute. As dengue
fever gets more severe or
acute the condition causes
internal bleeding and a
significant drop in blood
pressure which can cause
severe shock that can lead to
death. This stage is also known

What enhances the spread of

Climate
Change
dengue
fever?
Due to the increase in climate change, it grants
dengue fever to enter new regions that it has
never been set its foot upon before, for example,
the northern part of America.

Urbanization
With more and more people joining or moving to
urban areas each year, the lack of job
opportunities or housing space could end up
creating slum areas around the city. Due to lack of
government supervision, thus these areas could
potentially be vulnerable to dengue assaults
because of their unhealthy lifestyle.

What enhances the spread of

dengue fever?
Environmental Hygiene or Poor
Sanitation
With more and more people going to
urban areas and focusing to earn money
to improve themselves from their past,
people tend to forget about hygiene. Not
only personal hygiene, but also the
environments hygiene. Maintaining
surrounding environment clean is
essential to avoid getting dengue fever.

Alternative treatments
There are some natural treatments such as Papaya and Guava
leaves that have been proven to help treat dengue, by
increasing the amount of platelets or thrombocytes.

Symptoms
Nausea
Appetite loss
Severe headache
Nose bleeds
Internal Bleeding
Very low platelet level
Small blood spots under your skin

What Can We Do To Prevent It?

Use mosquito
repellent
Reduce mosquito
population
Wear protective
clothing
Use Mosquito nets
while sleeping

Indonesia

A bacteria called Wolbachia, is currently being

tested to know whether the bacteria is capable of
blocking the ability of the mosquito to transmit the
Dengue virus.

What is Wolbachia? Its a bacteria that,

theoretically, has an ability to block Insects
capability to transmit disease. The bacteria
naturally appear in up to 60% of all insect species.
This bacteria could be passed on from generation

Singapore

Singapore chose to
protect their citizens by
educating them, advising
them what they should
do to avoid dengue and
what should they do if
they contracted dengue.
They also drain any
potential water source in
the urban area that can
potentially cause dengue.

India
lndia approaches dengue by trying to eliminate aedes
mosquito larvas to grow up into adult mosquitoes by using
larvicides. If they survive, they will fog the city area and drive
them away over a period of time.
