What is a Project?
Project characteristics: A project is a
temporary endeavor undertaken to create a
unique product, service or result
Temporary: It means that every project has a definite
beginning and a definite end
Unique product, service or result: It means that
project creates unique deliverables, which are
products, services or results
Progressive Elaboration: It means that the project is
developed in step by step and it is always in
continuous progress through increment by increment

Portfolio Management: A portfolio refers to a collection of
projects or programs and other work that are grouped
together to facilitate effective management of that work to
meet strategic business objectives.
Program Management: A program is defined as a group
of related projects managed in a coordinated way to
obtain benefits and control not available from managing
them individually. Programs may include elements of
related work outside the scope of the discrete projects in
the program. A project may or may not be part of a
program but a program will always have projects. A
complete communications satellite system including the
design and the construction is a good example of a
program.
Types of PMO
Supportive: Supportive PMOs provide a consultative role to
projects by supplying templates, best practices, training, access to
information and lessons learned from other projects. The degree of
control provided by the PMO is low.
