Tiger Pride- Week 5 Reflection
This week was the first week of tiger pride in two weeks. The
students and I were a little out of sync since we were all on spring
break the past two weeks. I tried my best to rally the students though
and refresh all of them on what we learned before we went on break.
On Tuesday, there were a couple less students than usual, the class
size being about 14 instead of the usual 16 to 18. Thoren and I decided
to do continue with soccer one last week since all the students really
seemed to enjoy it before and we wanted to have them have some
time to play some actual soccer games also. On Tuesday, we did soccer
skills and some soccer game play on the black top at Cleveland
Elementary so the class was not so spread out, but the area was still
too small. Many of the students complained about the small area and
the black top so I decided that it would be best for the students to play
in the grassy area on Thursday. Over the course of the classes, we
reviewed the skills we learned in the previous weeks, which included
passing of the soccer ball and soccer ball dribbling. Both days I brought
about 4 to 6 soccer balls, cones, and then pennies on Thursday to
make the distinction of teams easier for the students.
The SLOs that I assessed the students on this week were the
skills we learned from earlier in March, which were soccer dribbling and
passing, and applying those skills to the soccer game play they were
partaking in. The students should have known by the end of the
lessons how to properly pass a soccer ball with control and remember
how to properly stop the soccer also. For soccer dribbling, I also
wanted the students to practice control of the soccer ball and make
sure that they were keeping the soccer ball within arms length of the
body. The health related goals I had for the students were maintaining
moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least 50 percent of the
lesson. I tried my best to effectively achieve my SLOs and I believe that
I achieved a majority of them with only a couple students not reaching
a couple of them. Lots of the students remember the skills they
learned about soccer before the break and many could properly
demonstrate the skills. The only issue that the students were having
was being motivated to participate in class. Due to this, not all of the
students reached moderate- to vigorous physical activity for 50
percent of the class. Next time, I will try to motivate the students
better and come up with ways to make the activities and skills that we
do during tiger pride more enjoyable and fun for the students so they
will want to participate. I tried to make sure that every student had an
opportunity to play and interact over the course of the class by having
rules that incorporate more people. The problem with this though, was
that not all students complied with all of the rules.

I believe that I addressed and incorporated the 4 criteria of the

learning experience. I definitely believe that I improved the motor skill
performance of a majority of the students. Many of the students, when
I introduced soccer, were having trouble understanding all of the
concepts. I tried my best to let the students practice the skills that we
were focusing on during day play first, so they were comfortable
enough with the soccer skills before going on into game play. This gave
the students that were in more entry level of soccer the opportunity to
practice their skills and become more comfortable with soccer. Through
this, I gave the students the maximum amount of practice time I felt
was necessary. Over the course of the soccer unit, a majority of the
class (about 75 percent) was devoted to practice time for the students.
Over the course of the class, I incorporated the cognitive, affective and
health related fitness. I had the students recite and practice the cues
of the skills that I taught to them. I also had the students stay active
over the course of the class. On Tuesday, the students were in activity
for at least half of the class. The other half of the class the students
were split between giving instructions to the class and managing the
class over the course of the lesson. On Thursday, it was a little more
difficult to keep all of the students active the whole time. Many were
being either unresponsive or fussy about the activities. I tried my best
to keep the students active and in game play but many gave me
excuses and were unmotivated to play in any sport or activity. In order
to improve the physical activity of students, I need to be stricter about
participating in class and being active throughout the class. The less
distractive people that are in the class, the more focused the rest of
the class can be. Over the two days of classes, I offered a variety of
variations in order for all of the students to participate. On Tuesday, I
paired students that were more proficient in soccer with the students
that seemed to struggle a little more. The students that were better
helped the students that had some difficulty with the skills. The
students that were at a higher level got the opportunity to practice
their high skills. The students that were at a higher level had the
chance to test their skills in game play and were able to dribble and
pass the ball from a further distance so they could test their accuracy. I
also had the students that had more experience play against each
other in game play so they had more competition. All the students had
an opportunity to test skills and practice to get better.
I tried my best to be along the perimeter of the class when I was
teaching so I was able to see everything that was going on better. I
also walked down the middle and different areas of the space to
critique certain individuals and see if all the students were performing
the skills correctly. At the beginning of each lesson, I stated the COTS
of each skill and performed the skill first on my own and then had a
student perform it. If it was a skill that is new and I just introduced, I
first demonstrate the skill then have a student demonstrate the skill so

the rest of the class has a different perspective. In the beginning of the
class, I gave an overview of what the students will be doing over the
course of the class. The students were all standing in front of me and I
had them make eye contact and give me a yes if they understood the
directions I was giving to them. Over the course of the lessons, I did
my best to provide feedback to students that I believe needed the
feedback regarding their soccer skills. I also rewarded the students or
gave words of encouragement to the students I believed were trying
and working to improve their skills. The only issue I seemed to have
was remembering some of the girls names over the course of the
lesson on Thursday. I confused some of the names, which many of the
students were not appreciative of. This incident lead to some of the
girls ignoring me or being disruptive for the rest of class. I tried my
best to apologize and have the students be more interactive in the
end, but it was very difficult. At the beginning of class, before the
students got to the area, I made sure to set up a majority of the
equipment I could just give instruction and explain to the students
what they would be doing for class. I also tried to set up everything
ahead of time so it was less time that I had to manage the class and
turn my back on them just in case something were to happen. This
group of students can be very rambunctious so it is difficult to turn
ones back on them without having something happen or a student end
up being upset or hurt. With the students that were disruptive in class
this week, I gave them the choice to either walk around the class with
me or go inside and sit with their teachers. Most of the students
decided to go back in and participate in class instead. I believe that my
teaching showed enthusiasm when it was necessary. For a lot of the
class, I had to manage the disruption of the students and deal with
many students that were acting out, so my enthusiasm was not as
high. When I saw students doing what I asked of a lesson or trying on a
skill, I tried to give them the praise they deserved. I did well on
controlling a majority of the disruptive students this week, giving the
students the opportunity to test the skills they have learned in terms of
soccer, and giving them freedom to play soccer games on their own. I
can definitely work on remembering the names of students for next
week, having a more structured way of controlling disruptive students,
and being more in control of students that are trying to be distractive.
For next week, I am going to start the beginning of class by
stating that everyone needs to hold all the questions they have until I
am done explaining what we will be doing for the day in class. I will
also look at the student roster ahead of time to go over the names of
the students so I can remember everyones names better. Since Thoren
and I spent a little over two weeks working on soccer and perfecting
the skills of the soccer students, we have now decided to move on to
some different content. This next week we are going to introduce the
sport of hand touch football and emphasize the hand touch part of it. It

will be very important that students are not tackling or pushing each
other, which might lead to a student or many students getting hurt. We
are going to introduce parts of the sport step by step so students have
an opportunity to practice the skills and feel comfortable with the skills
of the sport before actually partaking in the sport.
