Group Milieu Activity Outline

Assessment including:
Population to be served: Men and Women residing at the shelter

Learning need, including reading level: Need to be able to follow step by step directions
and read a recipe card (5th grade reading level.)

Developmental and mental status functioning: Dependent upon the individual.

Health beliefs and self-care behaviors: The fact that the residents are residing the
shelter shows that they have taken the initiative to care for themselves rather than to
reside on the streets. They have to follow the rules inside of the shelter such as
showering daily, washing their clothes, and eating meals as well.

Cultural beliefs and practices: Dependent upon the individual.

Client support system-ability to implement learning concepts: Well be the clients

support system during the activity.

Motivation for change in behavior: Stress reduction

A therapeutic goal: Stress/Anxiety Reduction

A description of the group/activity to be provided:

1) We will give each participant a notecard and ask them to rate their current stress
level.
2) Next, we will provide the materials and recipe cards for everyone to make their own
face/body scrub while we play relaxation music and diffuse calming essential oils.
3) Participants will then try the scrub on their hands (or face if they prefer,) (and wash it
off.)
4) We will hand out blank notecards again and ask everyone to rate their current stress
level after participation.
5) We will provide evidence-based education regarding the importance of relaxation and
its health benefits at the end (a reading/handout.)

An outline which identifies roles & associated activities of each student: Melinda will be
administering the first stress assessment, Sarah and Melinda will both lead everyone
through the process of making the scrub, and Sarah will administer the final stress
assessment.

Resources to be utilized including materials, time estimate, professional contacts, and

other relevant information: Notecards, pens, recipe cards, small jars, sugar, olive oil,
vanilla extract, a few different types of essential oils, music (played on a Bluetooth
speaker from an iphone,) and an essential oil diffuser

An evaluation plan and tool: Participants will rate their level of stress prior to and

following the activity on a scale of 1-10. We hope to see a truthful reduction.
