Definition/Explanation

Tutoring Implications

The point at which two

parties can agree to
disagree.

Use the idea of stasis to redirect the

tutee to the argument itself when
they begin to wander with their
ideas. The tutor may also use the
idea of stasis to play devils
advocate and think of the rhetorical
situation.

The idea of becoming

fluent in the idioms of
critique--to become
openly and
consistently critical of
not only the texts we
read, but also of
ourselves.
When one begins to
see things from
beyond the narrow
lense of ones own
perspective and
begins to see things
from the viewpoint of
others.
The idea that
knowledge is not a
sort of social capital,
but, instead, is created
through the interaction
between human
beings.
A place where the
student is allowed to
openly and colloquially
express their thoughts
without fear of
academic critique.
Thinking outside of the

students and tutors
move beyond the
pedagogical and into
the meta.

think more critically about prompts.

Use this to develop thought in

tutees that is not only mature,
wherein it accounts for counter
arguments, but asks them to realize
the true nature of society and
thought itself--that we are all of the
same suffering.
Use this idea when the student is
stuck in a certain ideological
thought process and would benefit
from creating new ideas that are
their own.
Create safe spaces when working
with students who have difficulty
expressing their ideas due to
academic pressure or the confines
of the assignment whilst trying to
keep it pertinent to the assignment.
Use this when the student is
overwhelmed by philosophy and
other hegemonic structures of
power by asking them to question
and build upon knowledge.
Use this idea to give face to the

problems of institutional writing.

Use this idea particularly when
working with students who are from
different cultures, employing tactics
that may work better for them as
individuals.
Use this idea to help others find
their voice in the face of the
monolith that is hegemony whilst
avoiding inflammation and
radicalization of students views.
