3 Year Proposed Budget

Jami OConnor

Mountain View Elementary is located in Cobb County. The school is being rebuilt and the
opening year for the new school is the 2017-2018 school year. The new media center is going to be
created around the Learning Commons environment. The learning commons will be equipped with new
furniture, five desktops, 30 laptops, a SMARTboard with projector, and video equipment. The learning
commons will not be provided new books, the books in the current media center will be packed up and
moved.
Mountain View Elementary has a student population between 800-900 students each year. The
budget allotted to the school media center is $11,614.00 per year. With the new learning commons
created by the county, there will be a lot of new technology that will come with the new school and will
not be taken out of the media center budget. The current media center has 20 iPads for use. The
principal, Dr. Renee Garriss supports the learning commons concept and wants the learning commons to
be the heartbeat of the school using multiple forms of technology for collaboration, class lessons,
individual use, and research. All materials in the media center will be coded to protect the allocated
budget and funds. The following proposed budget was discussed with the stakeholders in the school and
based around a technology needs survey completed by the teachers in the school to ensure that the
purchases support the standards being taught in all grade levels and can be used by all grade levels.

3 Year Proposed Budget

Books:
The book collection in the media center is constantly being weeded and refreshed. As the
standards are edited and changed it is important to keep up with the new and edited content areas so the
teachers and students have a sufficient amount of resources to use. New series and additions to existing
series that are of interest to the student population must be kept up and books that are damaged or lost
must be replaced.
Magazine:
Teachers indicated that they do use the magazines that are offered to add another resource to
students for research. Also, many teacher resource magazines that we once received in print are now
available online. The price of these online resources are included in the magazine portion of the budget
since we can also receive these in print.
Software:
In order to have access to MackinVia, each school in Cobb County must use a portion of their
budget to keep the database. Apple software has been included as it is needed for the iPads. FreeFlix is a
software program that the teachers use regularly and teachers indicated that they wanted to keep this
software.
Equipment:
With the move to the learning commons model, there is a limited amount of technology that is
being purchased by the county. Currently the media center has 20 iPads for use in the media center. With
class sizes that can be up to 30 students, having a full class set for lessons and research is needed.
Teachers and students have asked for technologies that are more than just iPads and laptops. Ozobots and
BeeBots offer more technology and STEM lesson potentials. These materials can enhance a lesson and
students and teachers can use them in projects, simple coding, and extension lessons. The touchscreen
TV will be used to enhance iPad instruction and can be used by students and teachers. Our video
equipment is out of date but it was discussed that videos will be taken using the iPads. The Mac
Notebook will be used to edit videos and projects.
Technology Supplies:
This portion of the budget covers the additional supplies needed to work with the technology.
The iPad covers must be purchased in order to protect the iPads. The Apple TV conversion is needed to
convert the touch screen TV into an Apple TV.

This three year projected budget is based around some current needs of the school and the needs of a
learning commons. A learning commons is the heartbeat of the school and must be equipped with
multiple forms of technology and resources for the students and teachers to use to work with and access
content for the standards being taught. This budget does not reflect any additional sources of money that
may be given to the media center through the PTA, Foundation, or BookFair.
