SamanthaStephensonhascompleted1.5semestersofstudentteachinginmy11thgradeLanguageArtsclassroomatWithrow
UniversityHighSchoolduringthe20152016schoolyear.WithrowHighSchoolisoneof14highschoolsintheCincinnati
PublicSchoolDistrictandiscomprisedofabout1400students.Theethnicbreakdownincludes88%black,1.5%Asian,
3.5%Hispanic,1.3%multiracial,and3.9%white.TenpercentofthestudentsareclassifiedasLimitedEnglishProficient,
20%havedisabilities,and70%areeconomicallydisadvantaged.
Forthirtysixweeks,Ms.Stephensonwillhavetaught97studentsinthreesectionsofELA11.Shewasresponsiblefor
teaching40specialneedsstudents,including32studentsonIndividualizedEducationPlansand8EnglishSecondLanguage
(ESL)students.AsIreflectuponSamanthasexperienceatWithrowthusfar,Imhavingadifficulttimecaptureher
strengthsinoneletter,asshepossessessomanyessentialqualitiesofanexceptionaleducator.Ofalltheimportantassets
Ms.Stephensonbringstothetable,itwouldberemissofmenottoexpanduponherpreparedness,herabilityto
adapttochallenginglearningsituations,andherpassionforteaching.
First,Ms.Stephensonisapreparationninja.Shehasbeenresponsibleforteachingashortstories,ACTtestprep,Ohio
GraduationTestprep,narrative,persuasive,andexplanatorywriting,andmultipleliteratureunits.Shehasapproachedand
executedtheplanningofthesetaskswithconfidence,competency,andimpeccablepreparedness.Herunitshavebeen
completedweeksaheadoftimeandshesubmitslessonplanstomeatleastaweekbeforeimplementation.Shedemonstrates
agreatdealofforwardthinkingasshestrategicallychooseshersupplementalmaterialssothatsheisabletomakeimportant
thematicconnectionsinthefuture.Therehasnotbeenonesingledaywhenshewasillpreparedordidnothavetheentire
sequenceoftheclassperiodmappedoutinherhead.ImagineifALLseasonedteacherscouldsaythesamething!
Next,Samanthapossessesanoutstandingabilitytoadapttochallenginglearningsituations.Asaforementioned,herclass
loadiscomprisedofaverydiversegroupoflearners;sheembracesthechallengeandcustomizationnecessitatedbyvarious
subgroupsofstrugglinglearners.Onmanyoccasions,shesworkedwithstudentsthroughlunch,betweenbells,afterschool,
andduringhersparetimewhenherdailytimerequirementshavealreadybeenmet.Inthefirstmonthofschoolthisfall,Ms.
StephensontooktheinitiativetofamiliarizeherselfwitheachandeveryIEPandLEPplanonfile.Shedemonstratesan
awarenessofdifferentlearningstylesandmodifieslessonsandassignmentstomeetthediverseneedsofstudents.

Finally,SamanthaStephensonisaparagonofpassionwithinthefieldofeducation.Inthisprofession,therearethosewho
merelyshowuptoworkandteachamonotonouslesson,andthosewhoembarkonamissiontodevelopthecorepotentialin
childrentoultimatelychangelives;withoutadoubt,Ms.Stephensonisthelatter.Shehasworkeddiligentlytodevelopavery
goodrapportwiththestudents,ofteninitiatingoneononecorrectiveconversations,asopposedtopunitiveconsequences.
Notonlydidthestudentsacceptherastheregularteacherincharge,Ialsofoundthatseasonedteammembersviewedheras
astrongworkingmemberofourteam.
IamconfidentthatSamanthaStephensonwillbeanassetatanyschoolinwhichsheworks.Tobehonest,whicheverschool
