- 3.2.4.B.1. Recognize observational descriptors from each of the five senses

I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):


A. Students will use their knowledge from the previous 4 lessons on the senses to
complete their in class project and written test.

II. Instructional Materials


A. 5 Senses project packet
B. End of unit mini test
C. Review power point
D. Microwave
E. Popcorn
F. Bowls (20, one for each student)

III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea, outline of
additional content)
A. Prerequisite skills
1. Knowledge of the 5 senses through previous lessons
B. Key Vocabulary
1. Smell: the faculty or power of perceiving odors or scents by
means of the organs in the nose.
2. Taste: the sensation of flavor perceived in the mouth and throat
on contact with a substance.
3. Touch: come so close to (an object) as to be or come into
contact with it.

4. Hear: perceive with the ear the sound made by (someone or


something).
5. Sight: the faculty or power of seeing.

IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
1. To introduce lesson, begin by asking the students to tell me
what they remember from our four previous lessons on the 5
senses.
2. Next a reading of the book My 5 Senses by Aliki, to the
class.

B. Development
1. Explain the directions to our 5 senses Popcorn project to
the class.
2. Each student will have a 5 Senses Popcorn packet.
3. Go over the directions thoroughly with the children
4. Make sure to have the material prepared before class begins.
5. Have the microwave and popcorn ready beforehand.
6. Make the popcorn, while the children listen intently to the
sounds, using their sense of hearing
7. Pass the cooked popcorn out to each student.
8. Allow the children to use the rest of their senses to observe the
popcorn.
9. Children will be able to smell, touch and look at the popcorn.
10. Make sure students record their observations.
11. After recording their observations for those four senses in the
project packet, the students will be allowed to eat the popcorn.
12. After tasting the popcorn, students must record their
observations for their last part of their project using their taste
sense.
13. Walk around the classroom as the students finish filling in their
5 Senses Popcorn project.
14. The students will have time to color their projects as well to
finish.

C. Closure

1. To conclude the lesson, have students inform what their


favorite part of the unit was. Have students share what they
thought was more interesting.
2. After class discussion, inform students to prepare for the test
they will have at the beginning of next week. (Test is attached)

D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. If child has a specific learning disability and has difficulty with
following instructions in the classroom and performing tasks
on time like the rest of his/her classmates, provide a checklist
to keep this students on task.

1. Formative: 5 Senses- Popcorn project
2. Summative: End of unit test
