Prefacetoourguidelines:statedpurpose
Thepurposeofthesesocialmediaguidelinesforteachersshouldnotbetolimitteacheraccessto
excellenttools.Instead,theseguidelinesshouldencouragethecreationofanenvironment
wherefacultyareeducatedandcaneducatestudentsinthe21stcenturyliteracies(Anderson,
2012).
Anothergoalsocialmediapoliciesistopreventinappropriatecontactbetweenstudents
andstaff.Blockingsocialmediainitselfdoesnotprohibitinappropriatecontact.Teachers
shouldrefertotheirowndistrictsexistingpolicyonappropriateteacherandstudent/teacher
communication.Theseguidelinesrelatespecificallytodistrict,schoolorclassroomsocialmedia
accountsestablishedforthepurposeofstudentlearningintheclassroom.Anappendixof
additionalresourcesadvisingteachersofsocialmediacommonsenseforprivateaccountscanbe
foundattheendofthisdocument.

DefinitionofSocialMedia:
1. Socialmediaisdefinedasanyformofonlinepublicationorpresencethatallows
interactivecommunication,including,butnotlimitedto,socialnetworks,blogs,Internet
websites,Internetforums,andwikis.(NYCDepartmentofEducationSocialMedia
Guidelines,2013)
2. SomeexamplesofnetworkingsitesincludebutarenotlimitedtoFacebook,LinkedIn,
Twitter,Instagram,Flickr,YouTube,SnapChat,Remind,Kik,Schoology,Groupme,
SeeSaw,Homeroom,Edmodo,etc.(Anderson,2012)

KnowledgeofGuidelines
1. Makesureyouknowyourschooldistrictssocialmediaandtechnologyusepolicies
beforeinteractingwithstudentsonline.

AppropriateUseoftheInternetandDistricttools
1. Donotaccessinappropriatesitesonyourschoolissued/owned/controlleddevicesat
anytime,before,during,orafterschool.

2. Maintainseparateemailaccountsforpersonal/professionalsocialmediaaccounts.

Assumptionof(orlackthereof)ofPrivacy
1. Befamiliarwiththesocialmediaprivacysettingsbeforeyouopenthesitetostudents.
2. ConsidercomputeruseincludingInternet,emailandsocialmediatobeaprivilege,nota
right.Useschoolissued/owned/controlleddevicesforschoolworkyoushouldhaveno
expectationofprivacyinthosedevices.(EducationMinnesota,2016).

theyknowwhotheycanphotograph.Somepoliciessuggesttheopposite:thatonthe
annualinformationform,aparentmustoptoutofhavingtheirchildphotographed.Our
