Each student is required to conduct a finite element solution to a proposed engineering mechanics

problem. Any software may be used. The emphasis should be on understanding the accuracy of your
model predictions, considering different element types, mesh refinements, boundary conditions, etc
and the impact on the results. The expectation is not to develop large complex models but rather to
focus on a well-defined problem and fully explore the accuracy of your solution.
Take a normal coffee mug with a handle. Measure the cup and make realistic plane stress/strain,
axisymmetric and three dimensional models of you holding the cup when it is filled to three quarters of
its height with coffee. Justify all assumptions. Comment and discuss the validity of the results.

The report should be in the form of a technical engineering paper (max. 12 pages, double-spaced).
Appendices of extra material can be added.
Introduction and rationale outline the mechanics problem to be solved; detail other research, models
and analytical work in the area; provide a rationale for using finite element analysis to explore the
problem.
Objective provide some specific objectives to be achieved in the project.
Model assumptions, descriptions and development describe all aspects of the model including mesh,
boundary conditions, element choice, applied loads. Include key pictures and details of model in report
other aspects could be added in an appendix beyond the 12 page limit.
Validation describe experimental, analytical or other models that will be used to compare and validate
your results.
Results provide tables, graphs and images of key results.
Discussion discuss model results in terms of validation, effect of different element types, mesh
refinement, boundary conditions, load application, etc. Discuss limitations of your model and any
suggested refinements/developments.
