COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to arrive on time and attend class each day
Students are expected to participate in class discussions
Students are expected to complete homework assignments for each class period
(reflections, double-entry journals, muddiest point, practice plan, case study, etc.)
Students will be held to all policies stated in the Emory & Henry Student Handbook
ATTENDANCE / BEHAVIOR
1) Attendance and participation is required at every class session. Roll will be taken
every day, but it should be clear that mere attendance is not the same as active
participation. Your active participation in all class sessions is expected. Active
participation includes regular class attendance, faithful completion of all
assignments, and informed contributions to class discussions.
2) Two unexcused absences = 1 letter grade drop from final grade.
Three tardies = 1 unexcused absence.
Four unexcused absences may result in a W/F.
3) In order for any absence to be excused, students must contact the professor PRIOR
to the absence. Extenuating circumstances will be considered at the discretion of
the professor.
4) Assignments due on specific dates are due on or before that date. It is the
students responsibility to get any assignments missed either before or after class
hours. There is no make up for assignments, quizzes, etc. missed due to
unexcused absences. No late work will be accepted according to the two excuse
policy. You will have a maximum of two excuses throughout the semester to turn

in any WRITTEN assignment up to one week late. Group / class projects or

presentations, tests, etc. do not apply to this policy.
5) Extended illness or absence will need to be registered with the Dean of Students
Office.
6) Cell phones must be in the off position and stored when in class (no text
messaging, etc.). Laptops may be used for class-related activities.
7) Please show respect to all who are part of our learning community. Some of the
issues we will discuss may be controversial. It is imperative that we create an
environment in which we are able to express our ideas freely and in a nonthreatening manner. As adults, it is expected that we will be able to listen to ideas
that are different from our own and respond to those ideas in a professional and
civil manner. Regard and respect for others and the challenging of ideas in a way
that is not demeaning to others is crucial.
8) Students must arrive on time and prepare to leave only when dismissed by the
professor.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT / ACCOMMODATIONS
Academic support services are available through the Powell Resource Center (6144), the
Writing Center (http://www.ehc.edu/academics/writingcenter.html), and the Computer
Helpline (6881). Your academic advisor may also help you navigate any obstacles to
success. Please contact the Powell Resource Center for help with special challenges to
learning. If you have a documented disability that will present a difficulty in this course
or experience problems that will interfere with success in this course, please discuss this
with your instructor immediately. If you have an accommodation plan, you will know to
arrange a meeting with me to discuss your needs. Sometimes personal stress affects the
academic experience. The Powell Center is a good place to start if you are having issues
that affect learning. Call 6144, or stop by Wiley 220
PROFESSIONALISM
Students in the Health and Human Performance program are expected to behave as
professionals at all times. You should know that showing disrespect, dishonesty, or
insubordination towards mentors, faculty, staff or fellow students is grounds for dismissal
from the Health and Human Performance Program. Professionalism includes appropriate
language and actions during class and also when interacting with individuals in the
community such as administrators, teachers, students, etc.
WRITING REQUIREMENTS & POLICY ON ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Any evidence of academic dishonesty may result in a grade of 0 for the assignment or
failure of the course. Cases of academic dishonesty will be reported and dealt with in
accordance with the Colleges honor code procedures.
INCLEMENT WEATHER

Emory & Henry College is primarily a residential college with a majority of its
undergraduate students living on campus. Therefore, it is the intention of the college to
remain open during inclement weather conditions. However, in the event that there is a
decision to cancel or delay classes because of inclement weather, information will be
communicated through a variety of sources including the E&H campus alert system.
When the opening of the college is on a two-hour delay due to inclement weather, the
following condensed class schedule applies to this class:
Monday/Wednesday/Friday classes:
Since this class is usually from 11:00-11:50, the delayed time would be from 12:00
12:35.
For the full inclement weather policy, refer to the E&H Academic Catalog.
