primary phase. Prevent Child Abuse Indiana and TCAP do not enforce laws
about abuse and neglect, but instead work to make a difference in the lives
of families and children, with special attention to stop problems before they
occur.
The Tippecanoe Child Abuse Prevention Council is a highly educated group of
volunteers and professionals that work to support and educate families about
the correct knowledge, resources, and skills that are necessary to properly
raise a child. TCAP reaches out to families to let them see how they can
make a difference as a parent in the primary prevention phase, before
neglect or abuse develops.
TCAP works hard to get all community members involved in fun, unique
activities that promote good parenting and healthy child upbringing. It works
closely with the YWCA of Greater Lafayette, the National Casa Association,
and Bauer Family Resource to host community events, educational
workshops, head start programs for schools, and more. The Tippecanoe
Child Abuse Prevention Council strives to educate and advocate for the
prevention of child abuse and neglect through these different avenues.
Best Regards,
Alex Yoder

attendance rates at events

Future Objectives for TCAP

TCAP needs to utilize its PR and communication strategies to gain awareness.
By April 2017, TCAP should work to increase its media outlets for parents from just

With more media outlets, TCAP should also increase numbers of event and workshop

attendees from 200 to 300 by April 2017.

an email system so knowledge about all its services can be spread to families, donators, and

other organizations.

make an enormous impact on child abuse and neglect prevention if the correct

April is Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness Month in Tippecanoe Co.
TIPPECANOE CO., Ind. (WLFI) April is Child Abuse and Neglect
Prevention Month and members of the Greater Lafayette community were
out spreading awareness on Friday.
At the kickoff event, pinwheels were handed out and planted as a
symbol of child abuse awareness month. The Tippecanoe Child Abuse
Prevention Council has several other events planned for the month of April.
Tippecanoe Countys Court Appointed Special Advocates program
helps over 500 children each year who have been abused or neglected. TCAP
members said they hope this month will let community members know the
resources available to them.
We have a strong set of resources in our community, a lot of good
organizations that work with families. And I just think when families are
struggling, they need to know that there is people out there that can help
them if they just need to reach out, said Coleen Connor, executive director
of the Tippecanoe County CASA program.
Connor said programs like CASA and TCAP try to give children a voice
as well as help prevent child abuse.
Many of our families are dealing with mental health issues, drug
issues, those type of things lead to domestic violence and things like that,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 11, 2016
Car seats will buckle in your Childs Future
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- Children have a dream to one day drive their
own vehicle. Sadly, this is sometimes never obtained due to lack of car seat
safety among toddlers and young kids. It is important for parents to become
educated on Indiana car seat safety laws and the significance of their usage.
The Tippecanoe Child Abuse Prevention Council offers car seat safety
workshops twice a year for parents of the West Lafayette and Lafayette
community. The workshop teaches about the state requirements for car
seats and the dangers of a ride without them.
Whether it is a two-minute drive or a two-hour drive, parents seem to
forget the importance of car seat safety, states Indiana state police officer
Jared Maniago. Children who ride in the front seat are at a 40% higher risk
of getting injured in a crash.
The Indiana car seat law requires all children under 8 years old to ride
in a vehicle while secured in a child car seat or a booster. If ones child is too
large to fit, children must be in a safety belt.
TCAP is pairing with the Red Cross to educate community members
on age and height restrictions for car seats, says Jennifer Hall, director of
events and media for TCAP. The Red Cross will also demonstrate on the
proper ways to strap kids in to secure your childs safety.
