ABSTRACT
Sentolo Formation members especially in Kliripan region, Kokap district,
Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta Province in the form of limestone relate with
existence of manganese deposit. The study determines the deposition mechanism of
the limestones which then explains the relationship with manganese deposition
through detail stratigraphic measured and paleontology method.
There are 4 lane tracks is used in the stratigraphy measurement. Each track
consists of several facieses are the grouped by their lithofacies. Preceded by lithology
products of volcanism (Old Andesite Formation) and marine depositional facies
origin as members of Sentolo Formation and the remaining is a recent product
deposit.
Facies that are members of Sentolo Formation was generally formed in Upper
Miocene-Pliocene. Was first formed in Inner Neritic-Middle Neritic depositional
environment which influenced by high energy and low energy interchangeably. High
energy shown by the deposition of limestone through a gravity flow such a turbidity
current which characterized by coarse sand size, normal grading, laminated and thick
bedded. Low energy sown by deposition of limestone through traction and suspension
system which indicated fine grain size, thin bedded and laminated. Depositional
environment then turned into a back-reef into lagoon environment due to sea level
drop. Depositional is relatively affected by the low energy alternately by high energy
periodically.
