Fraternity & Sorority Life Support Model

Mission: The fraternity/sorority community at BGSU aims to develop responsible citizens
who are dedicated to lifelong membership and community involvement through our
commitment to academic excellence, positive relationships, civic engagement, and leadership.
Priorities for 2015-2016:
1. Continue creating innovative and structured methods for risk reduction that will result
in a safer social environment
2. Continue to provide intentional and individualized support to councils and chapter;
prioritize successful chapter operations that result in an enriching member experience
and sustainable membership growth
3. Continue to enhance and prioritize leadership initiatives coordinated by Fraternity &
Sorority Life
4. Continue to measure the type of direct learning occurring as a result of the FSL
experience, in addition to measuring retention rates of students who affiliate with
fraternities and sororities
5. Work alongside council leaders to promote self-governance, mechanisms for peer
accountability and community ownership
6. Create a central identity for the fraternity/sorority community through the use of shared
community standards and marketing efforts
7. Prioritize relationship building with campus partners, alumni, advisors, headquarters
staff, FSLAC, etc.
8. Provide education and support for councils and chapters related to diversity and
inclusion initiatives coordinated by Fraternity & Sorority Life
Purpose of Support Model: To offer the fraternity and sorority community support that
emphasizes the importance of social responsibility, academic excellence and leadership
through open communication, needs-based advising and direct interaction with organization
members and advisors.
Advising Philosophy: We believe in the holistic development of members in the fraternity
and sorority community. Our role is to provide supplementary advising that promotes selfgovernance and, reinforces organizational and community values to enact positive and
sustainable change.

Outcomes of Support Model:

1. Build and maintain authentic/sustainable relationships with the Fraternity and
Sorority Life Community and other partners (e.g. (inter)national headquarters,
campus constituents, etc.)
2. Contribute resources and ideas that result in successful chapter operations and an
enriching student experience
3. Support president/officer in developing and achieving personal/chapter goal
Meeting Structure:
1. Presidents: 1x/month (individually and/or with cluster presidents)
2. Advisor: consult if needed
3. Attend a chapter event: 1x/semester
4. Chapter or Executive Board Meeting: 1x/semester
