This artifact is my literacy philosophy paper from the reading/language arts methods

course. The literacy philosophy was a required paper for a course I took in the fall of 2015.
During this essay I discussed my beliefs on literacy being incorporated in the classroom. This
assignment goes in depth on the integration strategies I see necessary for a successful literacy
classroom. I also discussed my generalized educational philosophy.
I am satisfied with the final product of the literacy philosophy paper because it was a tool
used to measure my growth throughout a course. Each of the points discussed throughout this
paper emphasize my personal growth towards becoming an effective language arts teacher.
Therefore, it will apply directly to how I teach language arts subjects in the future. The different
methods for inclusions strategies and vocalizing the importance for students to understand
reading, writing, and speaking to be successful in life are an absolute.
This essay proves my growth throughout the course because I didnt have any
background knowledge on this subject prior to the term. Therefore, my learnings throughout the
course were exemplified in this paper. I learned effective literacy integration strategies for the
classroom. I was able to comprehend the access teachers have to outside resources, and how to
make the resources available to students. These resources include technology, books, magazines,
and so on. I was able to understand the importance in integrating multiple subjects into one
lesson plan. This is crucial to meet all the standards, and helps make learning more enjoyable for
the students. The most important learning I received from this paper was to not let my personal
literacy history affect how I teach literacy. I didnt have the best literacy history, and I cant let
that impact my attitude towards the subject as a whole because my future students will see that.

Since I have not attempted my literacy philosophies in a classroom, I wouldnt change

anything at this point in time. Im sure I will make modifications to my philosophy once I have
spent time as the main teacher in the classroom. I dont find it necessary to make those
adaptations until that time.
This experience was valuable for me as I work towards becoming an educator. This
course established an effective foundation of reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking
practices that I will use in the classroom as a teacher.
