Freedom Middle School Lesson Plan

We are... Lifelong Learners, Effective Communicators, Critical Thinkers

SOL(s):

8.14 The student will make connections between any two

representations (tables, graphs, words, and rules) of a given
relationship.
8.16 The student will graph a linear equation in two variables.
8.17 The student will identify the domain, range, independent
variable, or dependent variable in a given situation.
Objective(s): The student will be able to
The student will know how to write an equation.
The student will understand how to write a linear equation.
The student will understand how to represent a function as an equation,
table, and a graph.
The student will be able to write a linear equation.
The student will be able to write a linear equation given a graph or a
table.

Materials needed:

Smart Notebook, Writing Equations

notes (100), Stations Recording Sheets
(100), Stations materials, Homework
Writing Equations Practice (100)

Warm-Up/Opener/Review/Prior Knowledge:

Date, 24 game, and Pi contest.

Students were given the option to participate in a contest to memorize as many digits as pi as they can.
Presentation/Activities/Guided/Independent Practice:

1. Date, 24 game, and pi contest

2. Homework check and review
3. Notes: Writing Equations
Start with a real life scenario. Use this scenario throughout the notes and relate each part to
help students make connections.
Small groups
4. Stations: The purpose of the stations is for students to practice writing the equation from a graph,
from a table, and from a description. Students will understand the connections between all of these
representations.
Station 1: Students are given equations and graphs. They must match the equation to the
graph.
Station 2: Students are given tables and several equations. They must match the equation to
the correct table. Students are given tables and must write the equation from the table.
Station 3: The students are given equations and must graph them. They will need to create
their own table to do this.
Station 4: The students are given word problems. They must read the description, write the
equation, and then solve the question at the end.
Bonus Station (if students finish all of the other stations): Students will put all of these pieces
together to represent the function in an equation, graph, table, and words.
5. Homework: Writing Equations Practice
Closure:

Bring students back together and summarize what we did in the stations. Talk about the connections
between all the representations and how we can do this.

Check for Understanding/Formative Assessment:

Circulate and assist students as needed
