Purpose of conference:
The student has been getting into trouble at school. The mother is
angry with the teaching staff and wants to discuss the problems.
Description of conference:
The mother came in very angry and feeling as if her child is being
singled out. The mother put everything out on the table that she is
upset about and the teachers did a great job of putting things into
perspective and showing they were not singling the student out. They
do care very much for the student and want the problem behaviors to
stop. It was an intense, high stress meeting.
Roles of the professionals in attendance:

General education teacher Miss McCarver
General education teacher Ms. Thompson
Student teacher
Questions:
1. Was the goal of the conference met?
Somewhat. I do not feel the mother really listened to everything
the teachers told her. It is difficult when there is a problem with
the student that needs to be addressed and the parents are
angry about how the problems are being addressed at school.
2. How were the parents made to feel comfortable?
The mother was greeted kindly by all teachers and given an
adult sized chair to sit in. There was tension apparent but the
teachers did a good job of sounding cheery and happy to see the
mother.
3. Were the parents/guardians opinions respected and
incorporated? How?
Yes. The teachers did an excellent job listening to the mothers
opinions and accusations. I felt their responses to the mother
were professional and appropriate considering they were being
attacked some during the meeting. They would acknowledge the
mothers concern and her ideas of how to solve the problem
while incorporating how it could be done at school within the
current procedures.
4. Was the student in attendance?
The student was not in attendance.

5. How did the teacher diffuse/acknowledge negative comments?
The teachers acknowledged the mothers concerns and problems
with how the teachers were dealing with the behavior problems
with the students. They reassured the mom that these strategies
are used with all students in special education and general
education classrooms. It is not something that is only used with
her daughter. This helped the mother feel better but she still is
not in agreement with the strategies. She asked that one of the
general education teachers not be involved in disciplining her
daughter whatsoever. She asked that we take measures to
reassure her daughter in order for her to feel comfortable at
school (which is not an issue we have seen, but is something she
tells her mom when she gets home).
6. What did you learn that would help you have successful
conferences with your future students?
This experience showed how successful conferences can be
when you have a good relationship with the general education
teachers. When you collaborate with them and do your best to
work with them to make the school day go smoothly for
everyone, when you have problem meetings with parents like
this one, you come across united, because you are united.
