Events Leading to War Day 2

STANDARD:
VS7 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the issues that divided our nation and led to the Civil War by
a) identifying the events and differences between northern and southern states that divided Virginians and led to
secession, war, and the creation of West Virginia;
b) describing Virginias role in the war, including identifying major battles that took place in Virginia.
c) describing the roles played by whites, enslaved African Americans, and free Americans, and American Indians.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION(s)/Big Idea:


EQ1- What conflicts developed between the northern and southern states in the years following
the American Revolution and led to the Civil War?
EQ2- Why did Virginia secede from the Union?

We will begin by taking the vocabulary quiz, then getting in groups and

The student will have a race to sort their vocabulary terms as a review before
the quiz. Next students will take the quiz, this should take 10-15 minutes. Then
I will put the students in groups and they will use the text book and create a
tree map of the events leading to war. The three branches will be Nat Turner,
John Brown and Harriet Tubman. They will then display their maps in the front
of the room on construction paper and I will talk about then. This should take
about 25 minutes total. The last thing we will do is create our foldable for this
notes set.

Next Class:

Rationale: Students live in Virginia and it is important that they understand their history and how
we got to where we are today.
Content Outline: Nat Turner: Led a slave revolt and killed white men women and children, was
put to death. Harriet Tubman: Led the Underground Railroad that led hundreds of slaves to
freedom. John Brown: Led a raid on the Armory at Harpers Ferry in an attempt to arm slaves and
start a rebellion. Abraham Lincoln was elected president, which scared southern stated leading to
the first seven succeeding.
Differentiation: We will be discussing things out loud as a whole class and as small groups, we
will create maps and a foldable for a hands on approach and we will once again highlight
important information for a visual aid.
