TRIANGULATION

TRIANGULATION a method for extendi

ng horizontal control for topographic and
similar surveys which require observation
s of triangular figures whose angles are m
easured and whose sides are determined
by trigonometric computations.

TRIANGULATION
Because, at one time, it was easier to mea
sure angles than it was distance, triangula
tion was the preferred method of establis
hing the position of control points.
Many countries used triangulation as the
basis of their national mapping system. T
he procedure was generally to establish p
rimary triangulation networks.

The figure illustrates

such a triangulation s
ystem and used as co
ntrol for the producti
on of national maps.

Sample Problem:
In the quadrilateral ABCD, the following a
ngles are measured.
Angle BCD = 33
Angle ADC = 3430
Angle ACB = 4930
Angle ADB = 3730
a. Find the angle CAD.
b. Find the angle BAD.
c. Find the angle ABC.

Sample Problem:
From two inaccessible points A and B, the angl
es to two triangulation stations C and D were o
bserved as follows:
Line AB = 500 m long
Angle CAB = 7930
Angle DAB = 2830
Angle DBC = 3130
Angle DBA = 8430
a. Find the distance BC.
b. Find the distance BD.
c. Find the distance CD.
