Subject: Algebra I
Period: 2nd
Date: December 3rd
Objectives:
TSW determine an endpoint given one of the endpoints and the midpoint
TSW use the distance formula and midpoint formula to complete a project (HSNCN.B.6)
Materials:
Pencil, Paper, Dry Erase Board, Dry Erase Marker, paddleboards, Keynote Slides,
Project
directions, Graph paper
Bell Ringer:
Find the midpoint and the distance between the points (2, 1) and (6, 3)?
(4 min)
Set: (4 min)
Class, Im going to play a video and I afterwards I want you to tell me what you
think is going
on. TTW play the backwards song video. Alright, who can raise their hand and tell
me what
was going on there? [The video was in reverse]. Exactly, those guys actually learned
how to
speak backwards just for that video. This period well be doing two things, first well
be using
the midpoint formula, but well sort of be going backwards. By that I mean, Ill give
you a point
and the midpoint between that point and a mystery point and you have to tell me
what the
mystery point is. The other thing were going to do today is your first project grade,
but Ill
explain that later.
Procedures: (A-F/G 15 min) (H-I 15 min)
A. TTW ask the students what the midpoint and distance formula are: students may
use their
notes if necessary.
B. TSW take notes on how to find an endpoint given the midpoint and one endpoint
C. The teacher will ask the students why the steps are the way they are. [Its the
reverse of the
midpoint formula]
D. TTW do two examples of how to reverse the midpoint formula to solve for the
endpoint
while TSW copy the examples into their notes.
E. First example: One endpoint (0, 3), Midpoint (-1, 2)
E. Second example. Endpoint (-2, 4) and midpoint (0, 1).
F. TTW put a problem on the board for the students to do using their paddles.
Endpoint (3, -2)
Midpoint (1, -1)
G. If 90% of the class gets it correct, move to the project, if not, do one more with
endpoint (0,
