First Day Script

-Welcome to World History! My name is Mr. Lee and I will be your teacher for the year. First off I would like to
introduce myself and tell you a little about myself. I am from Tazewell, Virginia and I went to college at Emory &
Henry College. As you can tell from the decorations on my desk, I am a bit of a nerd and will occasionally make a
geeky reference. Now I would like it if we went around the room, introduced yourself and say one interesting fact
about yourself.
(Students do the introduction activity)

Page | 4

-Now we are going to discuss history. Now I know that history is often a subject that puts people to sleep, which by
the way dont fall asleep in class because I might have to embarrass you or throw a shoe. So why do we study
history?
(Let students answer)
-We study history because as humans we must learn from our past mistakes and also to know how we got to where
we are today. Look around, life is pretty good for us. No one tried to kill you on the way to school today, I hope.
We dont have to worry about bandits, the plague, or the Huns showing up. So next question, what is your favorite
part of history?
(Let students answer)
Well your first assignment is going to be write a 1 page paper on what your favorite part of history is and why.
(Allow the rest of class to be for explanation of the rules and questions about the assignment)

First Day of School Schedule

Introduction
-Introduce myself personally to the class
-Give the class expectations
-These will include classroom rules, grading scale, and procedures
-Give a brief explanation of class schedule
-What Units we will be coving each month
Discussion

Page | 5

-Allow time for questions and discussion about any of the class rules or expectations
-Start discussion with, What is History?
-Continue this discussion with Why should we study it?
-The goal is to have the students understand why this class is necessary and why we study what we do
Conclusion
-Allow time for final discussion points to be concluded
-Final section of class is reserved for personal discussion
-Allows students to get to know me on a more personal level and allow some time for me to gain
some insight into their lives

Daily Schedule
Bell Ringer
-Students will have 5-10 minutes to complete the daily Bell Ringer
Lecture/Reading
-The class will then participate in a lecture or reading assignment. Both are centered on either reading or
listening to new information
-Students will take notes and ask questions during this time
Discussion/Group Work
-Class will discuss the content of the days lesson such as via questions such as What was the significance of
that event? etc.
-Or class will split into groups to complete a daily assignment about the days lesson

Page | 6

Conclusion
-Class will conclude with final questions and assignment of any homework

Bellringer Assignments
Bellringers will be organized as short 2-5 question activities each class period at the beginning of class. The
question will consist of the most missed questions from the previous test/quiz or questions about frequently missed
topics. This will offered a chance for review every day to class and encourage the students to remember the
information we discuss instead of forgetting information after the test.

Morning/Class Opening Procedures

When the students enter the room they will be asked to sit down and complete the bell ringer before the first five
minutes of class are through. I give this little bit of extra time to encourage students to talk and interact in a
controlled manner. This will allow me to talk to them as well and get an insight into their lives. While this is going
on I will quickly be taking role using the assigned seating chart. Once the students have all finished the bellringer
we will go over the correct answers and then begin the main lesson for the class that day.

Roll Taking Procedures

Page | 7

Roll will be taken quickly using my assigned seating chart. As students enter the classroom I will make a mark that
they are here as well as great them for the day. After the bell rings I will do a quick scan of the room to look for any
empty seats or people I missed checking in at the door.

Tardy Procedure
Students will be allowed one tardy for free to cover any unexpected situations that may arise on the way to class.
After the first one any others must have an appropriate excuse, preferably a written note. The consequences for
being tardy is a reduction in the students participation grade by 5 points for each tardy or 10 after multiple tardies.
If the student is consistently tardy their parents may be contacted or the administration of the school informed.

Absent Student Procedure

Students will expected to be in class unless with a proper excuse such as a note from the doctors office. If students
miss days then they can meet with me after class to receive any missed work such as quizzes or assignments.

Pencil Sharpener Procedure

Students are expected to have their pencils sharpened before class or before the bellringer activity is finished. This
time will cut down on interruptions during class to sharpen pencils. If a student does need to sharpen a pencil then
they must wait until an appropriate time to ask and they must raise their hand and wait to be called on. If
interruptions become a problem then students will have their participation score reduced by 2-5 points per
interruption.

Classroom Rules
1. Entering the Room- Students will enter the room quietly and politely. No running or shoving into the room is
permitted. Talking is allowed but only at appropriate volumes. Yelling and abnormally loud voices are not allowed.
2. Starting Class- Students will sit at their assigned seat and begin work on the daily bellringer. They will also use
this opening time to sharpen any pencils or unpack any supplies they will need for class. As before, talking is
allowed but only at appropriate volumes.
3. Asking Questions- If a student has a question at any time during class they must raise their hand and wait politely
for me to call on them.
4. Answering Questions or Reading in Class- Calling on students in my class will be determined by a name list. I
will write all of my students names onto Popsicle sticks and put them in a jar on my desk. When I ask a question to
a student or call on someone to read I will pick at random a Popsicle stick from the jar and call on whatever students
name is on the stick. This is to encourage students to pay attention and allow for all students to participate equally in
class.
5. Respect and Politeness- I expect my students to show not only myself but their fellow classmates proper respect
and politeness. This means not interrupting other people, respecting others property, no rude language, and no

Page | 9

bullying. If students break this rule the punishment can range from reduction of participation grade to administrative
discipline depending upon the severity.
6. Group Work- Often times students will be split into groups to work on assignments together. During this time I
expect the students to interact with each other with the same respect and politeness as mentioned before. Students
will allow everyone to talk and not interrupt people. Group leaders and Facilitators will be assigned to each group.
The Leader is responsible for being the spokesperson to the class for the group and making sure the group stays on
task. The Facilitator is responsible for making sure all the members of the group are contributing equally.
7. Assignments- All assignments will be turned in on time and completed. If a student turns in an assignment late
then they will have 10 points deducted from the final grade of the paper for every day late.
8. Leaving the Classroom- Students will clean up their areas before leaving the classroom each day. This includes
picking up all belongings, pushing chairs back in, etc. Just like when students entered the classroom, students are
expected to leave in a quiet and polite manner.

Classroom Consequences
Consequences for class will mainly consist of deductions to the students participation grades. When a problem
occurs the student will be pulled to the side and I will address them so they do not feel like they are called out. If
problems continue to happen their participation grade will be deducted by 5 points, eventually increasing to 10 points
and so on. If problems continue to increase then informing the parents or administrative action may be necessary.

P a g e | 10

Classroom Rewards
Rewards for the class will be given in the form of bonuses to participation and more physical rewards. If students
are particularly good during a week I will reward them with a treat on Friday of that week. Rewards could be
anything from candy to bonuses on participation or a quiz. A final reward for the class if everyone makes above a
certain grade on the final test then the whole class will get to have a pizza/movie day.

Schoolwide Procedures
Students are expected to follow all schoolwide procedures according to the instructions give. All drills such as fire
drills and earthquake drills are to be performed silently and politely. The procedures are to be treated as serious thus
no joking or horseplay will be allowed. Should a serious problem arise the misbehaving student will be sent to the
administrative office due to the severity of the procedures.

Behavioral Interventions
If a behavioral issue occurs then I will either speak to the student at my desk, in the hall way, or in the back of the
class. This is so the other students do not hear what I am saying and our conversation stays between just me and that
student. I will first address the issue and ask why the issue has arisen. I will first give one warning that the
behavioral problem is an issue and must not happen again. If the problem occurs again I will have another
conversation with the student and deduct 5 points from their participation grade. If the problem continues to occur
after that then their participation grade may be reduced even more, parents may be contacted, or the school
administration may be involved.

First Homework Assignment

P a g e | 11

The first homework assignment will be a short essay. The essays topic will be the question, What is your favorite
part of history and why? This will give me an insight into the interest of my students and will allow me to spend
extra time on topics that they believe are interesting. The paper is not meant to be difficult so the length will only
have to be one page. Depending upon the ability and schedule of the classes they may have 1 to 3 nights to complete
the assignment.

Organizing Me
-Desk- My desk will be organized with trays for turning in papers, space for a laptop, cup of pens and pencils, and
notebooks.
-File Cabinet- to be used to keep track of various documents. These documents will be sorted into folders each
containing:
-Student Assignments
-Tests
-Lesson Plans & Substitute Lesson Plans
-General Paperwork
-Parent Correspondence
-Computer- My computer will be my main source of storage with everything back up onto a hard drive to prevent
accidental loss of work. Also will be using an online database to keep track of students grades and assignments.

P a g e | 12

-Book Shelf- Used to store textbooks and other books required for classes. Late work basket for any overdue
assignments. Also there will be a section of books that are some of my favorites that I will allow students to borrow.
These books will be some of my favorite classics as well as more modern YA & Fantasy books.

Beginning Seating Arrangement

My class will be organized with two main sections.
Section 1- This section is your standard set up for classrooms. The desks are divided into rows with the
students facing the front of the class where I will instruct from with the help of the blackboard. This will be
the section that is dedicated to reading & lecture for the class.
Section 2- This section will be set up with large round tables for group discussion. Students will be given
different groups each day to go over the new information and work together on an activity. This is to
encourage cooperation and discussion of the topics.

Seating Assignment Method

Assigning seats at the beginning of class will be random for each class. Each class will have students sitting
according to a different list. Examples of these will include:
-Alphabetical
-Birthdays

-Alternating (Ex. Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl)

Working together in groups

The class will have group work quite often throughout the year. We will have a rotating group assignment for each
day we have group work. The students will be split into three group designated by their assigned seat. Each day we

do group work the students will be put into a group different than their last one. Example- Seat number 1 will be in
group 1, then group 3, then group 2. This will keep the students interacting with different people for every group and
allow for students to hear different perspectives.
