Grading Policy
Grading will be based on these factors of student performance:
1. Class participation (10%)
2. Individual performance tests (30%)
3. Written Evaluation (20%)
4. Music Performance Viewing (10%)
5. Band Concert Attendance (30%)
*** Chair Placement does not affect grading.
Class Participation:
Class participation grade will be determined by the students ability to bring
all prescribed materials to class each day (pencil, music in folder, instrument,
instrument materials, etc.). It will also be determined on students effort in
class, respectfulness to classmates and instructor, and their discussion of
performances in class. The student will begin every week with the maximum
amount of points given, and it will only go down if the guidelines above are
not met sufficiently.

Individual Performance Tests:

Individual performances will cover the concepts of beautiful tone production,
accurate technique, and individual musicality, targeting each of these
specific skills each time. Performance tests will be given each day in a high
frequency, low magnitude fashion, meaning that the students will have
ample opportunities to perform successfully in front of their classmates as
well as in private for the instructors. This is also a representation of outside
of class practice habits, as well as comprehension of topics covered in class.
Each performance test does not have a mass impact on grade, however,
over time they will add up to 30% of their overall grade. Individual
performance is a pivotal part of basic musicianship and will help to ensure
success throughout the students schooling career inside and outside the
band hall.
Written Evaluations:
Written evaluations encompass the concepts of beginning music theory, note
naming, scale identification, musical vocabulary, as well as any concepts
previously learned in class. Written evaluations correspond closely with
topics in class, and each evaluation is meant to prepare and benefit the
student each class. (For example: If we have a written evaluation over scales
or rhythms, those same scales and rhythms will appear in that class.) Written

evaluations are meant to improve musical knowledge overall, including

scales, rhythms, and tone quality factors.
Music Performance Listening:
Students will be required to attend one musical performance each semester,
and type a one page essay on what they found enjoyable about the
performance they witnessed. Having an ideal aural image for what the
student strives to sound like is essential for their success. The student can
learn an immense amount from listening, including the sound of a musical
blend, ideal tone quality and technique, as well as finding repertoire that
they wish to perform.
Band Concert Attendance:
As band is a performance based class, the students attendance at each one
of their concerts throughout the semester is incredibly important. The
student will receive 100% credit for this category if they attend and play in
their concert. Every student must be in attendance, as every part must be
represented musically at each performance. Attendance is vital to the
programs success, students may fail the entire six weeks if they do not get
permission from the band director prior to missing a performance.
***Miscellaneous and other:
-Individual Education Plans for special needs learners that have been
arranged with guardians/school counselors will be handled on a case to case
basis and grading will follow accordingly.
-All grades for every student are well-documented, and on hand for students
and their parents to view if they have any questions, comments, or concerns.
