I was driving drunk May

Third, Two Thousand
Twelve.
That was one of the
beginning statements upon
which Myles Kittleson,
GHS Class of 2009, opened
his speech in front of the
Scotty student body this
past Wednesday during the
Ghost Out event.
Five great friends at
Montana Tech thought
theyd celebrate the ending
of what was a great school
year for all they were
going into internships
and planning to make
some
good
summer
money before returning
to their final year as Ore
Diggers:
celebrating
those internships, getting
everything paid for
making boo-coo bucks and
no expenses and it was
simply one of those spurof-the-moment decisions
to go out and party, with

Skye Buckles, Walker Allen and Lauren Runningen await their turns to read their
own obituaries at Wednesdays Ghost Out at the Glasgow High School.

only five days left of finals,

before departing from
each other to test out
their careers. According
to Myles speculations,
nothing could ever go
wrong.
Nothing had ever
happened before, he
reminded
his
GHS
audience, dont worry, Ill
get us to the next bar.
It was just exciting,

Myles recalled, me and

Spencer, Andrea, Taylor
and Calven, we decided
to go around the big old
valley south of Butte.
With Myles behind
the wheel in Andreas car,
their itinerary started with
a couple of cases of beer to
get the trip underway with
a destination of the farthest
place on their intended
route, which was Wisdom

at 60-70 miles away, and

then theyd work their way
back.
Everybody
was
drinking and having a good
time, celebrating the end
of yet another successful
year of college. They made
it to Wisdom and it was at
the Antler Saloon that the
bartender I.D.d everyone,
and guess what, everyone

only home hes ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided
by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and free-spirited bear Baloo
(voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who dont exactly
have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johannsson), a python whose
seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and smooth talking King Louie (voice of
Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and
deadly red flower: fire. The Jungle Book seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI
animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to

All the ghosts had to take a turn lying in the coffin in the
hallway of the Glasgow High School.

was 21 except for one person. And that person had a fake
I.D.

And the bartender says, This isnt you, and Andrea
says, You wanna bet? Well, Im not serving you.

So they all walked out. Now remember, Im a good
drunk driver, Myles told his audience. I said to my
friends, Dont worry, guys, Ill drive, Ill get us to the next
bar.

Which he did. At the Wise River Club they stayed
for about four or five hours. It involved some shots.
I was starting to get drunk, he continued to his
audience, I was getting that buzz feeling, where your face
gets numb. I was starting to lose my inhibition, things
were getting more difficult.

They piled back into the car where Myles suggested
another bar. With him behind the wheel once again
remember, hes a good drunk driver he said he was
swerving everywhere, using both lanes of the highway,
but they made it to yet another bar where they all had a
shot of whiskey along with their beers, toasting to a great
day to be alive.

Hey, its the end of the school year, its something to
celebrate. We all passed, we all had things going for us.
And we were all drunk, Myles said when they
decided to leave, and thats when I decided to try it again.
Im a good drunk driver.

As they were ready to walk out of the bar, the gang
thought it would be fun to steal the beer mugs, as Myles
said, They were really cool mugs.

So he exited the bar first and got the car ready for
a quick getaway, making sure it was faced in the right
direction so all the rest of them had to do was load up
and theyd be outa there in a flash.

His friends came out a couple of minutes later, stolen

Logan Gunderson reads his obituary. While a few of the

11 obituaries had a little humor thrown in and getting
some good chuckles throughout the audience even
from some of the adults who attended. When Myles
Kittleson took the stage, the laughter was over as he
told his heart-wrenching story.

beer mugs in hand, got into the car, and thats when the
bar maid came out and said, Hey, guys give me those
beer mugs back!
Myles started pulling away, but Taylor, who was
sitting in the passenger seat, urged Myles to stop so they
could give the beer mugs back.
We dont want her to call the cops for something
stupid like this, Taylor urged Myles.

Reluctantly, Myles did stop the car and they gave the
beer mugs back although he figured she would call the
cops, anyway.
I got mad. So I slammed on the accelerator,
throwing gravel everywhere, and just listening to that
engine roaring, Myles recalled, and when we got out
of the parking lot and hit the pavement I kept my foot
on the floor... thirty, forty, fifty, sixty miles an hour... and
this road that were traveling on is a windy road. The first
turn that comes up, we make the first turn. Here comes
the second turn, eighty miles an hour. Um... I start to

turn, we hit the ditch. The car started to slide sideways...

everybody was screaming...
What was just a fun day with my friends turned
into the worst nightmare you can ever experience, he
continued. The car was going sideways and we hit this
rock, sending us airborne. When we finally hit the ground
the car started going end over end, ejecting everybody
who wasnt wearing a seat belt. Glass was shattering,
people were screaming............
Following a long pause by Myles with tears in his
eyes, he was finally able to continue. Visualizing his
description from here on out wasnt a pretty picture.

Andrea... I scarred her pretty face. She has scars on
her pretty face to remind her of that, every day. Worse
than that, she had a traumatic brain injury. All because of
me. All because of my choice to drive drunk.
Caleb. He was thrown and slammed against the
pavement so hard... I broke his back, paralyzing him from
the waist down. He lost his legs. I took legs from him.

And Spencer. He was thrown from inside the car.
So hard. I mean the car flew seventy feet. Seventy feet.
Spencer went sliding across the pavement on his face. I
killed Spencer.

Myles went on to say that Taylor, who was wearing a
seat belt and stayed in the vehicle, had just minor injuries,
a few scrapes on his head.

When he climbed out of the vehicle and saw all of
us lying on the pavement, helpless... he had no idea what
to do. He was screaming, crying, he didnt know what he
was going to do. Please help, please help, PLEASE HELP!
We were in an area that had no cell phone coverage, so he
had to use a land line.
Eventually, help was finally on the way. The four
survivors were taken to the hospital; Spencer Lewis was

Myles went on to say

how fortunate he was to
be able to spend his time
at a treatment facility. I
was lucky, very, very lucky,
he said, also explaining
that they made him look
at pictures of that horrific
night. I was drunk and
I killed somebody. I
deserved... to be where I
was.
He is now on probation
until the year 2033. You
guys will be 40 by the time
Im off probation, he told
the students of GHS.
The remainder of Myles
speech was the dangers of
drinking and driving and
how it cannot only affect
your own life, but the lives
of others.
Its like playing Russian Roulette, he used as one
example. Would you put a bullet in a revolver, give it
a spin and point at your friend and pull the trigger? Do
you not value your friends life? Because thats what youre
doing.
Dont ever think an experience like mine cant
happen to you. It might not be one in six like Russian
Roulette. It might not be one in one-hundred thousand.
Or one in a million. But it can happen. Please. Please.
Dont take that chance.

To conclude his speech 38-minute speech he noted
that he had heard some laughter from the obituaries read
earlier.

This is what it is really all about, he said, and then
he read his best friends obituary:

Spencer William John Lewis, 21, of Cut Bank, died
Thursday, May 3, 2012 as a result of injuries sustained in
a motor vehicle accident.

The vigil was Sunday evening, May 6, at St. Margaret
Catholic Church in Cut Bank. The funeral mass was
Monday, May 7, also at St. Margaret Catholic Church.
Whitted Funeral Chapel of Cut Bank was in charge of
arrangements.

He was born March 28, 1991 in Cut Bank, the son of
Mark and Joyce (Gustafson) Lewis. He graduated from Cut
Bank High School in 2009 as a valedictorian, was an all state

taken to the morgue in Dillon.

Taylor was released from the hospital the next day.
For Caleb, Andrea and Myles, lengthy hospital times
at the Craig Hospital in Denver were just beginning,
ranging in times of two-two-six months.
I dont know if any of you have spent time in a
hospital, but thats about the closest thing to spending time
in jail as you can get, he said. After I got out of the hospital
I had to face what was coming. It was inevitable. I killed
one of my best friends and severely injured two others.

Indeed, he was in deep trouble.

I was scared, he said. I had no idea what to expect.
It was my worst nightmare. Being sent to prison. I asked
Dad what he thought, and he told me, (Myles makes a bit
of a growling voice to imitate his father) Well, youre not
going to go to prison, thats one thing I know for sure.

But when it came time to go to trial, it happened. He
was sentenced to 20 years with 16 suspended. Thats when
the reality of this ongoing nightmare which occurred on
May 3, 2012 set in.
This could not be happening to me, he thought
to himself in disbelief during a two-hour ride from his
sentencing in Dillon to Deer Lodge, the first time in
his life in handcuffs. Ive always been able to get out of
everything in my life. But this time it couldnt be done.

Sure enough, the invincible one the good drunk
driver was being sent to the pen.
