Lesson Content
What Standards (national
or state) relate to this
lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely
do teachers use just one:
theyd never get through
them all.)
Essential Understanding
(What is the big idea or
essential question that you
want students to come away
with? In other words, what,
aside from the standard and
our objective, will students
understand when they finish
this lesson?)

Objectives- What are you

teaching?
(Student-centered: What will
students know and be able to
do after this lesson? Include
the ABCDs of objectives:
action, behavior, condition,
and degree of mastery, i.e.,
"C: Given a sentence written
in the past or present tense,
A: the student B: will be able
to re-write the sentence in
future tense D: with no errors

MAFS.K.NBT.1.1 Compose and decompose numbers from 11-19 into tens and one
using objects and recording each composition or decomposition. Understanding
that these numbers are made up of tens and ones.

How can bigger numbers be broken down into smaller or more manageable parts?
How can this be applied to addition and subtraction?

Given a large number such as 19, students will be able to break it down into a ten
and nine individual ones 95% of the time. They will also understand that one ten is
made up of ten ones, they will be able to understand these concepts almost
always, with the exceptions of more difficult numbers.

Note: Degree of mastery does
not need to be a percentage.)
Rationale
Address the following
questions:
Why are you teaching this
objective?
Where does this lesson fit
within a larger plan?
Why are you teaching it
this way?
Why is it important for
students to learn this
concept?
Evaluation Plan- How will
you know students have
mastered your objectives?
Address the following:
What formative evidence
will you use to document
student learning during
this lesson?
What summative evidence
will you collect, either
during this lesson or in
upcoming lessons?
What Content Knowledge
is necessary for a teacher
to teach this material?

I am teaching this lesson because its important for students to be able to break
down numbers and this will help them in the future when they are learning how to
add numbers and subtract numbers, as well as multiplication and division.
I am teaching this with manipulative because my Kindergarten students often have
trouble seeing things that arent in front of them so by having students see the
domino and then drawing it on their paper they will be confident in the concept.

Formative assessment: When students are ready to move on they will put their
hands on their head so I know that they are ready. They will also be giving me a
thumbs up or down based on whether they understood the decomposition
Summative: This assessment is the worksheet that students are drawing their
dominos on. I will be collecting these to see if students understood the material.

Teachers will need to have a basic knowledge of numbers, as well as a knowledge

of dominos and place value knowledge.

What background
knowledge is necessary for
a student to successfully
meet these objectives?
How will you ensure
students have this
previous knowledge?
Who are your learners?
What do you know about
them?
What do you know about
their readiness for this
content?

What misconceptions
might students have about
this content?

Name:

My students will need to know their numbers and how these numbers relate to
each other. They will also need to know about dominos and how a domino is set
up.

They might not understand how to break down numbers into tens and ones and they
might not know how to compose the numbers back into whole numbers.

Lesson Implementation
Teaching Methods
(What teaching method(s) will
you use during this lesson?
Examples include guided
release, 5 Es, direct
instruction, lecture,
demonstration, partner word,
etc.)
Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to
do in teaching this lesson? Be

For this lesson, I will be using a demonstration. I will put the dominos up on the screen to
show the students how to decompose then they will draw it onto their paper. They can
also work with partners while drawing their dominos and do turn and talks based on how
they think the number should be decomposed.

Where applicable, be sure to
address the following:
What Higher Order
Thinking (H.O.T.) questions
will you ask?
How will materials be

Who will work together in

How will students

What will the students do?
What student data will be

Explanation
Teacher

Teacher
and
Student
Students

1. Students will begin sitting on the colorful carpet where I will

explain what a domino is and ask them if they have ever seen
a domino before. I will then give students a chance to talk to
their shoulder partner about a time that they have used
dominos before.
2. I will explain that they are going to get a worksheet where
one domino will have 10 dots and then I will be showing them
another domino that they will drawing on their paper in order
to create a number from 11-19.
3. Students will then go back to their seats

Applying the idea

1. I will start out with the number 10, then I will add a ones
domino to it I will have the students draw the ones domino
on their paper and then they will put their hands on their
head when they are done. I will then ask someone to give me
the answer which is 11 and then explain how they are broken
down between one ten and one one.
2. I will continue to do this until the number 5. (15) and then I
will get some students come up and draw the dominos and
come up with new combinations with either larger or smaller
numbers depending on how they manipulate the dominos.
3. Students will draw continue to draw these on their papers.

Wrap up

1. I will ask students why we used dominos, as well as how this

can be useful in the future.

a student struggles with the content?

If someone is struggling with the content then I can have them grab their own
dominos and manipulate them themselves to see if that helps them create a
better visual. They can also talk to their group mates for help.

a student masters the content quickly?

If I see that a student is mastering the content then I can ask them to come up to
the ELMO and create their own combination and teach the class.

Meeting your students

needs as people and as
learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
backgrounds of your students?

This lesson can connect to students because they have friendships that they have
built with people, so they can understand doing things with their friends and
someone interrupting.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
Students can come up to the ELMO and create their own combination dominos and
basically teach the class

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?

Students will be using pictures and manipulatives to solidify their understanding

of the concept.
Accommodations (If
needed)
(What students need specific

ST: He will have the dominos in front of him so that he can see the manipulative
first hand and play with them himself. This way he is still focused on the lesson.
