QUESTION 1: Choose an event in the novel you have studied which you find to be
most memorable. Give reasons for your choice and with closed reference to the
text. Discuss the event.
ANSWER:
Based on the novel Catch Us If You Can by Catherine MacPhail, the most
memorable event for me is the ending of the story. The main character, Rory and his
grandfather whom he called Granda, had no definite plans and moved from the
caravan site in a northerly and then a southerly direction before ending up in
Liverpool. They were helped along the way by strangers who gave them shelter and
transport. The story ends with Rory and Granda meeting up with Jeff, Rorys father
and they were staying in Liverpool near Jeffs family. I find the ending memorable
because families should stay together.
Rory and Granda had been looking after each other and as Granda was
getting old, it was time for Jeff to take over the responsibility of looking after
Granda. So, when they ended up in Liverpool, they got an apartment close to Jeffs
house, and it is a memorable ending. Moreover, Rory and Granda kept in touch with
the strangers who helped them along the way. Rory forgave Norma for making a
police report about them. They would be going to Rab and Annies wedding while
Sammy, Ruby and Tyrone would be visiting them soon. Rory kept in touch with
Darren.
The story has a memorable happy ending where the whole family was
together. I hope that my family and I would always be happy together forever like
Rorys family.
