SCHOOL CRISIS RESPONSE


STEP 1
1.

CRISIS ASSESSMENT

Meg Thimmesch quickly assesses what has happened.

Is danger imminent?
Is first aid needed?
Is medical assistance needed?
Is law enforcement, fire and/or emergency medical services needed?
Is the District Crisis Team needed?

This person must quickly assess the facts of the crisis incident. Is danger present or
imminent for students and/or staff? Is anyone injured? Does anyone need medical
assistance? What emergency support personnel are needed? Is there BOE property
damaged? Are there any hazardous materials involved?

2.

Meg Thimmesch summarizes the facts on the incident.


This person summarizes the facts of the incident so that they can be effectively
communicated to request further assistance and to direct responding personnel.

3.

Meg Thimmesch decides what assistance is necessary.


This person decides what assistance is needed, based on the facts, to swiftly and safely
respond to the crisis incident.

CALL
4.

Debbie Stevens calls 911.


This person calls 911, if needed, for emergency services, giving them a brief but thorough
summary of the facts of the incident.

5.

Lesley Watson calls 722-0614 for District Crisis Team.

This person calls


Central Office, 722-0614, if needed, with the same summary of the incident, and what
services are needed from the District Crisis Team.

INFORM STAFF
6.

Meg Thimmesch announces the incident to staff with code for a crisis.
This person calmly announces the incident to the staff with the predetermined code for a
crisis.

7.

Go to lock down is the School Crisis Code.


This is the predetermined School Crisis Code, which alerts the staff to take the
appropriate action.

8.

School Crisis Team reports to predetermined assignments.


The School Crisis Team reports to their predetermined assignments, or other location as
directed.

9.

Remainder of staff supervises non-involved students.

10.

Staff responsibilities in a crisis are:

Will be determined at the time of the crisis. Crisis team will meet
to determine the responsibilities at that time. Staff members are to be with
students.
11.

Meg Thimmesch informs staff of the details of the crisis.


This person is designated to inform the staff of the details of the crisis as soon as
possible. This may be in person or a note that summarizes the details and further
expected duties.

STEP 2

SCHOOL CRISIS TEAM


IMMEDIATE RESPONSE

Maize Police Officers coordinate security and safety at the scene of the
crisis.
This person provides and coordinates security and safety services at the scene of the
crisis and throughout the school.

2.

Stephany McClellan coordinates first aid.


This person assesses the need and provides, directs and coordinates first aid services.
This person is also responsible for first aid supplies.

3.

Katie Frank record names of those injured and/or involved.


This person records the names of those injured and/or involved in the incident.

4.

Katie Frank record names of those going to the hospital.


This person records the names of the injured who are going to the hospital and what
hospital they are being transported to.

5.

Linda Seiler/Debbie Stevens contact families of those going to the


hospital.
This person represents the school in contacting the families of those groups going to the
hospital.

6.

Janell Urban, Cindy Loomis, and Gina Hohler proceed to hospital


for support with a BOE radio on Channel 3.
This person(s) proceeds to the hospital(s) for support to the injured person and family
members. This person should have a BOE radio turned to Channel 3.

7.

Meg Thimmesch decides if a School Emergency Management Center


needs to be established.
This person decides if a School Emergency Management Center needs to be established
and where it will be located. If it is to be utilized, that information should be
communicated to the School and District Crisis Team members.

8.

Lesley Watson maintains student information database.


This person should have the student data base information readily available to aid in this
accounting for who is assigned to each classroom and to aid in the checking out of
students to their parent(s) / guardians(s).

9.

Meg Thimmesch decides if evacuation is necessary.


This person decides if the evacuation of students and staff is necessary and can be
facilitated safely.

10.

Maize South Middle School is our evacuation site.


This predetermined location needs to be identified before a crisis. An alternate location
may also be helpful. Factors such as safety, inclement weather, facilities with water,
restroom and adequate ventilation should be considered in the evacuation site location.

11.

Debbie Stevens staffs telephone information line with a brief statement.


This person should staff the schools main telephone lines to provide information to
concerned callers and to keep the other line(s) open for emergency outgoing calls. This
person should be prepared to read a brief statement of the incident, to give information
student check out procedures, any other pertinent information and/or instructions
deemed appropriate by the administrator.

12.

Lesley Watson staffs the student checkout location.


This person(s) staffs the predetermined area designated for student checkout. It would be
helpful for this person to have SASI information to aid in the proper release of students to
their parents(s) / guardians(s). A list indicating students that were checked out and who
picked them up must be maintained for accountability purposes.

13.

Stephany McClellan coordinates school health center.


This staff member coordinates the School Health Center. This may be the nurses office
or a large predetermined room may be necessary. This person should be trained in CPR
and emergency first aid, and should also be familiar with all available first aid supplies.
A list of all persons served should be maintained.

14.

Gymnasium is the health center location and alternate location.


This is the health center location and an alternate site in the event one would be
necessary.

15.

Katie Frank coordinates school counseling center.


This staff member would coordinate the School Counseling Center for persons who need
special crisis counseling. The location of the Counseling Center should be announced to
staff. A list of all persons served should be maintained.

16.

Maize Police coordinate bomb threat response.


This person coordinates the staffs response to a bomb threat. This person and selected
other staff members must be very familiar with BOE Policy which defines the response to
bomb threats. Coordination with BOE Police Department and Law Enforcement officers
is imperative.

17.

Maize Police coordinate searches of the school building/grounds.


This person coordinates the search of the school building and grounds relative to a bomb
threat or report of other suspicious items. Coordination with BOE Police Department
and Law Enforcement officers is important.

18.

Greg Geer arranges for emergency building repairs.


This person identifies and summarizes any damage to the school that might need
emergency repairs. The administrator or designated person should call 729-4781 with
the information as soon as possible.

19.

Lori Buselt designates press conference area.


This staff member designates and/or directs the press to the area where press briefings
will be conducted. This does not have to be in the school building.

20.

Meg Thimmesch communicates with concerned parents.


This person is available to talk with concerned parents who come to the school relative
to the crisis.

21.

Lori Buselt communicates with the press.

22.

Meg Thimmesch writes memo(s) to staff and parents.

STEP 3

DISTRICT SUPPORT RESPONSE


(If Necessary)

1.

Lesley Watson calls 722-0614 for District Crisis Team.

2.

District Crisis Team will utilize District Emergency Procedure Guide.

STEP 4

IF SCHOOL IS DISMISSED

1.

Chad Higgins decides on dismissal.

2.

Lesley Watson notifies District office at 722-0614 who calls Emergency


Notification List including Transportation and Food Service.

3.

Lori Buselt writes follow-up communications to staff, parents, and/or


press.
This person writes the follow-up communications to staff, parents and/or press detailing
an overview of the incident and when school activities will begin again.

STEP 5

DEBRIEFING

1.

Meg Thimmesch calls for and conducts crisis debriefing session for staff.

2.

Katie Frank decides on follow-up counseling for staff and/or students.


Based on staff feedback, this person arranges for and/or conducts follow-up counseling
for staff and/or students as needed.

3.

Meg Thimmesch writes a report on the incident.

STEP 6

PLANNING FOR NEXT DAY

1.

Meg Thimmesch gathers new additional information.

2.

Meg Thimmesch determines and schedules additional security and/or


counseling personnel.

3.

Meg Thimmesch determines and communicates changes in staff


assignments.

4.

Meg Thimmesch updates information to all concerned parties.
