Fractions

November 17 November 21

MONDAY, November 17
Objective: The students will be able to identify equal parts and unequal parts when
give a fractional picture. They will determine the denominator of a fraction by
looking at pictures.

Materials:
- SB Lesson Fraction Introduction
- Practice pages 177 & 179 *in class
- Practice pages 178 & 180 *homework

SOL: MATH 3.3 - The student will
a) Name and write fractions (including mixed numbers) represented by a model
b) Model fractions (including mixed numbers) and write the fractions names

Procedure:
- I will introduce fractions by asking the students what they know about fractions
and to give me examples of fractions. After several responses, we will begin the SB
lesson.
- SB Lesson

- slide 3: equal vs unequal parts what makes something equal? & discuss

- slide 4 & 5: students come up to the board and decide if each picture is

equal or unequal AND EXPLAIN

- slide 6 & 7: Students come up to the board and draw equal and unequal

parts AND EXPLAIN

- slide 8: naming equal parts
- Practice
PG. 177:
- I model #1 and #4 and have the students complete the front with partners
- READ #7&8 and have them do
PG 179
- I do #1&5 and have them do the rest in partners

TUESDAY, November 18
Objective: The students will be able to identify equivalent fractions.

Materials:
- SB Lesson Equivalent Fractions
- Practice pages 185 *in class
- Practice pages 186 *homework

SOL: MATH 3.3 - The student will
a) Name and write fractions (including mixed numbers) represented by a model;
b) Model fractions (including mixed numbers) and write the fractions names;

Procedure:
- I will introduce equivalent fractions
- After several responses, we will begin the SB lesson.
- SB Lesson
- Intro equivalent
- Show examples with fraction strips
- Sheet protector examples
- compare
- compare 1/3
- compare 1/8
- Fraction strips in sheet protector examples
- compare 3/6 AND harder
Workbook practice:
- pg. 185 in class **shade in the pieces**

WEDNESDAY, November 19
Objective: The students will be able to compare fractions with like and unlike
denominators.

Materials:
- SB Lesson Comparing Fractions
- Practice pages 187 *in class
- Practice pages 188 *homework (#8 IS EXTRA CREDIT)

SOL: MATH 3.3 - The student will
a) Name and write fractions (including mixed numbers) represented by a model;
b) Model fractions (including mixed numbers) and write the fractions names;

Procedure:
- Review fraction strip paper and do a few equivalent fraction examples.
- SB Lesson: Comparing Fractions
-Are all fractions equal? Give me examples of equal and unequal fractions

-Talk about the signs (<, >, =)

Slide 2: look at the longest fraction and the shortest fraction do you notice
anything about their denominators? The shortest fraction has the biggest
denominator and the longest fraction has the smallest denominator.

Slide 3: Have the students come and line up the fractions from longest to
shortest

*Look at the denominators again do you see a pattern?

*Compare to cake: the more we cut it, the smaller the pieces get

*Lets say I cut one cake in half and another cake into tenths. I give Taysia a

half from the first cake and Colton a piece cut into tenths. Who has the bigger

piece?

Slide 4: The bigger the bottom number (denominator), the smaller the fraction

Slide 5: Comparing fractions we are looking at two fractions and comparing

*If the denominator is the same, then all we do is look at the numerator

Slide 6:

*Can we just look at the numerator to compare if the denominators are
different?

-Have a student drag over pieces from the 2/5 to the to see which is bigger

*Show and 2/5 on the fraction strips under the document camera
-Practice

pg. 187 Do #1 and #5 with them. Tell them to shade in each fraction to help
compare

Thursday, November 20: Cross Multiplying

Objective: The students will be able to compare fractions with like and unlike
denominators.

Materials:
- SB Lesson Comparing Fractions
- Practice pages
SOL: MATH 3.3 - The student will
a) Name and write fractions (including mixed numbers) represented by a model;
b) Model fractions (including mixed numbers) and write the fractions names;

Procedure:
- Review comparing from yesterday
- I will be teaching them a little shortcut

**THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU KNOW YOUR MULTIPLICATION FACTS**
SB Lesson

- Slide 7 & 8: Multiply the denominators with numerators of opposite fraction.

*Write the product above the fraction and then you are just comparing the

products.

- Slide 9: show them the arm motions for knowing which way to multiply and
where to write the products.

- Slide 10 & 11: have 5 students come up to help with this one

*2 students draw the lines

* 2 students write the products above fractions

* 1 student decides <, >, or = and EXPLAIN WHY

- Blank Slides: write two fractions and have students practice on their dry-erase
boards *DO ABOUT 5 EXAMPLES*

- 2/3 and 5/6

- 2/6 and

- 5/9 and 7/10
IN CLASS PRACTICE:

- Explain and do #1 with them

- Go over all when finished

Friday, November 20
Objective: The students will be practicing equivalent and comparing fractions with
games

Materials:
- Equal Fractions Math Game Cards (8 sets of cards)
- Comparing fractions Game (**Use same cards**)

SOL: MATH 3.3 - The student will
a) Name and write fractions (including mixed numbers) represented by a model;
b) Model fractions (including mixed numbers) and write the fractions names;

Procedure:
Review comparing fractions with cross-multiplying

- Examples on white boards

Equivalent Fractions play about 2 times

- Memory: flip two over and decide if they are equivalent

**BOTH students have to show work for each problem**

Comparing Fractions

- Deal out all cards between two players

- Each player flips over 1 card

**BOTH students have to show work for each problem**

- Keep score according to your fraction
