Digestion in

the Ileum
Alkaline pH

Glands in the wall

of the ileum
Secretes intestinal juice which
contains digestive enzymes such as
peptidase, maltase, lactase, and
sucrase.
These digestive enzymes are needed to
complete the digestion of peptides and
disaccharides.

At the end of the digestive

process
All carbohydrates are digested into
monosaccharides such as glucose,
fructose and galactose.
Proteins are digested into amino acids.
Lipids are digested into fatty acids and
glycerol.

Vitamins and minerals are extremely

small and soluble and need not be
digested.
Dietary fibre cannot be digested in the
human body as the enzyme cellulase is not
produced in the human alimentary canal.
