CIS 221/223
Microsoft Gradebook - 10 points
Leaning Objectives: CLT 6. ISTE 2-5
Pages 81-91 of your textbook discuss assessment, testing, grading,
and rubrics.
Excel is amazingly useful software. You already had one assignment in
it, but because of its usefulness to learning and teachers, we will one
additional assignment using it.
At the end of every semester, I export your grades from the
MyEducationLab web site (or from MoodleRooms for other courses) and
import them into Microsoft Excel. This allows me to more
professionally format the data, calculate your grade, and store the data
for any future needs. This is a very common thing that teachers do.
Requirements:
1. For this assignment, I would like you to practice several
additional useful Excel spreadsheet skills, namely, formatting
cells, sorting and formatting data, calculating averages, and
copying formulas. This assignment wont take you too long to
complete. I am going to give you an Excel file to start with and
you will simply make changes to it and then submit it to me in
the MyEducationLab web site. To begin, download this
spreadsheet file:
http://cis.hfcc.edu/~djmaier/cis221-223/gradebook.xlsx
2. Next, copy the formula in cell Q16 to cells Q17 to Q19 so the
last three students also have their Final Grade calculated. To do
this, place your mouse in the bottom right corner of cell Q16 until
the mouse pointer changes from a wide plus sign to a narrow
plus sign (this is called the Fill Handle), then click and hold down
the left mouse button and drag it to the cell Q19 and release (or
use any copy/paste technique you know) . This will copy the
formula to these cells and calculate their final grade.
3. Next, sort the students by last name. To do this, highlight
cells A7 to Q19, click the Data ribbon in Excel, then click Sort,
then under Column > Sort By pull down and choose Column A,
and then click Ok.
4. Next, format the Final Grade values so they are in
percentages and have one digit to the right of the decimal place.
To do this, highlight all the final grades (cells Q7 to Q19), then

corrected
click the % icon on the formatting toolbar (Home on ribbon), then
click the Increase Decimal icon just to the right of that.
5. Next, resize row 2 so it is higher and there is some extra space
above and below the text (see my screenshot). To do this, you
can place your mouse cursor at the bottom of the gray 2 (row 2
column farthest to the left) in the left side of the Excel window,
click and hold down the left mouse button, and drag is down just
a little bit.

6. Next, delete row 4 (and extra row). You can do this single
right-clicking on the gray 4 (row 4 column farthest to the left)
and choosing Delete from the menu that appears.

7. Lastly, calculate the class average. To do this, go into the cell

where this value will be stored (Q20) and type in the following
function: =AVERAGE(Q6:Q18)
8. Submit your assignment by uploading it to the MyEducationLab
web site.
Below is screen shot of what you gradebook spreadsheet should look
like when you are done.
