NOVEL : SING TO THE DAWN

Summary : Chapter 9

Dawan is very tired and upset after seeing the head monk. Bao takes her to the
stall.
Bao advices Dawan not to give in to her brother and encourages her to be free
and achieve her dream.
Bao wants Dawan to free a caged sparrow, so she opens the cage door. At first,
the timid sparrow hesitates but then it flies away. Dawan realises she has to be
brave like the bird to be free.
Bao's brother, Vichai, comes and sees four empty birdcages but she has only
seventy-five cents in the box. He argues with her because she did not collect
money from some of the customers who set the birds free. Then he slaps and hits
her. Kwai runs and stops him. Later, Vichai walks away.
Bao chides Kwai for being a bully and for trying to grab Dawan's chance of going
to the City school. He gets angry and wants to strike her but Dawan stops him.
Kwai pushes Dawan and she falls on the broken birdcages. A piecec of sharp
splintered wood cuts through her left ankle and it bleeds.
Dawan screams at her brother for bullying her and trying to snatch her only
chance to study.
At that moment, Noi comes. She cleans Dawan's cut and bandages it.
Noi advices Dawan that it is useless to stand in men's way or to fight with them.
It begins to rain and Dawan limps home with Bao's umbrella.

Summary : Chapter 10
Dawan limps in the heavy rain to the river and sees her brother on the
bridge. She worries that he may catch a cold and he is concerned about the
cut on her ankle.
Kwai is unhappy that his sister had called him a bully and said that his ideals
had gone sour. He also realises that he is wrong to try to snatch her chance
to study.
Kwai asks Dawan what he should do but she advises him to think it out for
himself. She wants him to go home but he is determined to think and decide
on the bridge.
Dawan thrusts her umbrella into his hand but he does not notice it. When he
realises it, she is already limping home into the rain.
Kwai wants Dawan to take back her umbrella but she shouts that he needs it
more.
Then Kwai reflects how badly he had hurt his sister but she was still
concerned about him to give him her umbrella and hobble home in the rain.
The umbrella helps him decide what he has to do and he runs after his sister.

Summary : Chapter 11

Kwai tells Dawan that he has made the important decision and she
knows that he will not take away her chance to study at the City school.
Suddenly Kwai and Dawan see their father with buffalo. They let him
pass and then walk quickly to catch up with him.
Kwai wants to lead the buffalo home. But his father is angry that he did
not tell him he placed second in the examination.
When Kwai and Dawan reach home, they see their father upstairs.
Kwai persuades his father to let Dawan go. He explains that he will not
go because it is not his roght. He also tells his father that he has no right
to forbid Dawan and if he still forbids her, Takchit, the third best student
will go.
Dawan's father says that Dawan cannot go as she is only a girl and she
cannot do anything with more education.
Dawan wants her father to be fair to her and not ot misuse his power to
forbid her. She persuades him to give her a chance to learn new things
and believe that she can help people in their village and perhaps her
country.
Eventually, Dawan' father relents and lets her go. She is happy that she
can study in the City but Kwai is very upset.

Summary : Chapter 12

Dawan goes to the river to watch the sunrise for the last time before
leaving in an hour. Her brother is already there.
Kwai is unhappy that he has no chance to go and his dreams are
crushed. He still points out that more education for Dawan is wasted
because she just end up being a housewife.
Dawan wants her brother to understand that she is scared to go to the
City and not to make things difficult for her.
Dawan wants Kwai to feel happy that she has a chance to fulfill their
dreams. She promises to make things better for everyone.
Kwai is upset that he will be lonely when Dawan goes away and that
things will be not be the same between them when she comes back.
Dawan tells Kwai that she will miss everything and everyone in the
village. She wants him to watvh the dawn as they usually do and sing
her morning song for her.
Kwai quickly runs away because he does not want his sister to see him
crying. Then Dawan goes home.

Summary : Chapter 13
All the villagers gather around Dawan's house to bid her farewell.
Dawan goes upstairs to change her clothes. Her grandmother
advises her to face the world and accept changes bravely.
Dawan is sad to leave and she cries. Her grandmother gives her a
lotus bud and says that she will unfold or change like the lotus
bud when it unfolds and shrinks.
Dawan's father comes back annoyed after looking for her. She
asks him about Kwai and he tells her that he will not to come to
say goodbye to her. She is very disappointed.
Then Dawan boards the bus with her lotus-jar. She learns out of
the window to see the bridge.
Dawan hears her brother singing and waving goodbye to her.
Dawan also flings out her arms to hug her brother and sings
along.
Dawan then looks at her lotus bud and notices that a few unfolded
in the sunshine.
