2.5 Literacy and numeracy

strategies
Know and understand literacy
and numeracy teaching
strategies and their
application in teaching areas.

This artefact is a
certificate of
participation from a
two day science
professional
development
course.

Over a total of 12 hours, I used

my university study week time
to participate in a Primary
Connections professional
development course. This
course taught me a new way to
look at teaching overall, and
one which, after analysis, I
could include in my future
teaching.

This course reinforced to me that

one of the main strategies a teacher
should use when teaching science is
to incorporate literacy elements
throughout the lessons;
strengthening the teaching of both
Science and English. Providing
students with the opportunity to
develop their literacy skills through
science activities (such as
reasoning, completing a table, or
labelling a diagram) supports the
notion that activities that draw from
multiple KLAs bring relevance to the
learning that is occurring and
therefore improves student
outcomes (APST 2.5).

3.2 Plan, structure and

sequence learning
programs
Plan lesson sequences using
knowledge of student
learning, content and
effective teaching strategies.
6.4 Apply professional
learning and improve
student learning
Demonstrate an
understanding of the
rationale for continued
professional learning and the
implications for improved
student learning.

Professional development is a
necessity to any teacher,
allowing them to gain new
understandings to improve their
teaching practice. By engaging
in such a course, I was able to
gain a new understanding of
teaching which I can add to my
skillset and use when deemed
appropriate.
When I am able to select from a
variety of teaching strategies, I

am more likely to be able to

meet the preferred
teaching/learning styles of the
students in my classroom. When
a students preferred
teaching/learning style is met,
more effective and beneficial
learning is found to occur:

success. I find that the method
of teaching I learnt at this
course contained strategies

lessons, teachers use diagnostic and

formative assessment in addition to
numerous hands on activities to
teach student several concepts
revolving around one key concept
(APST 3.2).
Undertaking this course taught me
new information based upon current
research which I can apply to my
teaching repertoire for the benefit of
my student. Through continued
professional development, I am able
to update my understanding of
teaching, and provide students with
pedagogy which suits their needs
and is proven to improve student
learning (APST 6.4).
Engaging with external
professionals, such as those who
operate the Primary Connections
professional development
workshops, assists me in gaining
new insights into my practice which
may not be possible otherwise. By
engaging with external professionals
I was able to broaden my
professional knowledge and practice
(APST 7.4).
