Now that we have nearly completed the course, please think about the
following questions and answer them as best you can. You will need to refer
to your initial assessment to complete some of the following questions.
1) Concepts: Refer to your initial assessment (question 8) and any quizzes,
writing assignments or handouts that were a part of your class and that used
classroom terminology. Include what you feel are the 4 most important
concepts from this class.
A Craftsmanship- The quality of a piece of art made by hand, and putting
in enough effort to make a design as presentable as possible.
B

Contast- the striking difference in two related areas in order to catch the
viewers attention, or draw their eyes to a certain location of the work, by
using differences in color, texture, shape, values.

Gestalt Principles- the visual perception that the viewer has when they
want to see a design as a unified whole, and the idea that certain parts
of the art should belong together.

Value- The lightness and darkness of color.

2) Refer to your course syllabus. Please list what you feel are the three most
important Course Outcomes for you in this course, and briefly explain why
you chose them.
A I believe an important outcome of this class was to use our information from different fields of
study, and classes, and incorporate those into our work. I think its important to use your
knowledge of any class like history and bring that into a piece of work, as it can help you with
background information.
B

I think an outcome of this course that is important is recognizing and using design elements of
two-dimensional visual expression in our projects, because it is not only important to learn
them, but more important to learn to apply them to our work.

Lastly, I think it is important to incorporate a variety of global factors and perspectives in our
work, as every culture has its own unique design aspects and incorporating them into our work
can make it more diverse, and add a unique aspect.

3) Please insert up to three images of what you feel are your most successful
projects in the large spaces below.

From the lists you developed above, please list below, in order of importance, 23 key Course Outcomes (List 2), or Concepts (List 1) that you think you addressed
in each of these projects.

1. Incorporating Contrast
1. Gestalt Principles
1. Incorporating design
elements like perspective.
Ex. Aerial Perspective
2. Using different values
2. Contrast
2. Craftsmanship
3. Craftsmanship (using the
black border)

3. Values

3. Contrast (getting lighter

as the canyons reach top,
then dark again)

4) Consider again your definition of creativity from the Initial Assessment

(question 9). Place your definition, or a new definition, if your thinking has
changed, in the box below:
I believe that creativity is the way from which you express your talent of
your imagination, and the way you want to convey your own, original
thoughts in any aspect of life. I dont think that it has changed that much
from my initial assessment, but I do believe that it is okay to find inspiration
from others ideas, and change them in a way you like in order to make it
your own.

5) Based on your definition, choose your most creative project and insert
the image in the box below on the left. Being creative, or developing
creative solutions, is a form of critical analysis and reasoning-a key
competency developed in this course. Describe your creative problem
solving process for the project you chose by addressing each of the questions
below.

A) What was the goal of
this project? What were
you trying to achieve?
The goal of this project
was to incorporate
aspects of surrealism and
key design concepts of
perspective in order to
create a dreamlike
landscape. I was trying to
achieve a surrealist
dreamlike-quality space,
by using a deserted
canyon, mountain
landscape, after finding
inspiration from the
artist, Georgia OKeeffe.
B) What were some of
the constraints in
developing solutions for
this project? Were there
limitations in Time?
Media? Space? Scale?
I was very conflicted in
the beginning as I had
many ideas of how I
wanted to approach this
project, which left me
with limited time as I
began working on it. I
also wanted to optimize
the space in between the
two canyons in order to
make my sky, but I did
not want it to be too
small or too large, which

also left me confused,

but as I began testing
things out, the space in
between turned out to be
enough for my surreallike sky.
C) What are some of the
key class concepts (see
question #1) that you
considered in developing
your solution for this
project?
I used the design
perspectives of contrast,
and aerial perspective in
order to make my
mountains look more
surreal, and have the
appearance of getting
lighter as they
overlapped one another.

D) What new approaches did you try, in terms of media, new techniques, and/or
composition choices, to try to achieve your goals for this project? What was
successful? What would you do differently?
I think that using the scrap canyon at the top of my work was successful, as it
helped me portray that surreal idea. I think that next time, I could experiment
with paint more, and used different values for my sky, to make it seem more
dream like in between the two canyons. Next time, I could work more with the
blue paint when I want to portray a sky, and somehow make the clouds
incorporated into it, rather than using the cotton balls.
6) Throughout this class, we have begun to learn a new language a
language that attempts to communicate visually, through images or objects.
Do you think it is possible to communicate ideas, feelings, and/or emotions
through images or objects, without having to rely on words? Research online,
and find an image that you feel effectively communicates an idea or concept.
It can be a fine art image from an artist you like, or it can be an image from
popular culture so long as you feel it communicates effectively without
relying on words. Insert the image in the box below, and then answer the
questions.

A) What idea(s) and/or concept(s)

do you think this image
communicates?
I think that this image
communicates power and
dominance. I think that some key
design elements include: contrast
and bilateral symmetry.
B) Explain which visual elements
communicate these ideas or
concepts. For example, is it color,
composition, facial expressions, size
or scale? What else?
I think that the colors definitely
contribute to the symmetry, and the
red color on the borders
communicate a sense of power
around the bull.

C) Why do you think it is important

for us to be able to communicate
visually?
I think that it is important to
communicate what we are feeling or the
mood we are trying to communicate to
the viewer, so that they can feel the
same things that we do when working on
a piece of art.

7) What did you learn in this course that has connections to your life
experience outside of school?
I really enjoyed learning about key design concepts in this course, as I can
now go to DC and go to art museums and actually see and understand the
artists mood, and how they incorporated these design elements in their own
work. I really learned a lot about how there are so many different components
to a piece of art, and I look forward to testing myself next time I go to an art
museum.

9. (Refer to # 15 on initial assessment) which of the following would be a

violation of academic integrity?
a. Turning your friends artwork in from last year with your name on it
b. Copying a paragraph from an Art History book and changing one or two
words in your written essay
c. Buying a custom-written research paper online
d. Using facts from a web page, but naming the website and author in
your essay
A,B, and C.
