Speaking Assessment Criteria

1. Grammatical
Resource

Does the S use a range of simple grammatical forms with
control?
Does the S use complex grammatical forms? Do they
maintain control?

2. Lexical Resource

Does the S use a range of appropriate vocabulary?


Does the S use basic and sophisticated vocabulary?

3. Discourse
Management

Can the speaker be generally understood?


Is the speakers intonation appropriate? Is it used to enhance
and convey meaning?
Does the speaker use stress correctly? Is it used to enhance
and convey meaning?
Are individual sounds clear? Are they correctly produced?

5. Interactive
Communication

Does the S start discussions?


Does the S introduce new ideas?
Does the S react appropriately to what the interlocutor or
other candidate says?
Does the S keep the interaction going? Does the S expand
and build on ideas introduces by the other candidate?
Does the S try to move interaction towards an outcome?

Are the answers an appropriate length for the task?


Is there much hesitation?
Are the contributions relevant?
Is there any repetition?
Is it well-organised?
Does the S use linkers to organise their ideas?
