Lifestyleis
thewayapersonlivesintheirdailylife,whichalsoreflectsapersons
emotionandknowledge.AccordingtoOlson(2016),Youwillneverchangeyourlifeifyoudo
changedaily.Thesecretofyoursuccessisfoundinyourdailyroutine(Olson.2016).Some
peoplechoosetosmoke,drinkandtakedrugs,bepessimistic,andeatsnacksandjunkfood
everyday.Otherstendtodoexercise,bepositive,andeatvegetablesandfruitseachday.Healthy
lifestyleleadspeopletoasuccessfulroutine,butunhealthylifestyleleadpeopledownapathof
failure.Forinstance,JustinBieber,whoisaCanadiansingerknownforhisfirstsongBaby,told
authoritieshehadconsumedalcohol,smokedmarijuana,andtakenprescriptiondrugs(Justin
Bieber,2016).Hewasonly20yearsoldwhenhewasarrested,andthenhisbehaviorsruinedhis
reputation.Hewasafantasticsingerwhenhewasonly20yearsoldwhenhewasarrested,and
thenhisbehaviorsruinedhisreputation.Hewasafantasticsingerwhenhewasonly
14yearsold,butunhealthylifestylecausedhimtoloseagreatnumberoffansandopportunities
ofsinginginhisfield.Lifestyleisakeyifpeoplecanbecomesuccessful.Currently,according
someresearchers,Americancollegestudentslifestylehasdramaticallychanged.Moststudents
tendtohaveanunhealthylifestyle,whichcancauseweightproblemsandobesityandothertypes
ofdiseases(Racette,Deusinger,Strube,Highstein&Deusinger,2005).Unfortunately,thereis
notsufficientresearchaboutinternationalcollegestudentlifestylechoices.
Inthepastfewyears,expertsbeganresearchingthecauseofAmericancollegestudents
unhealthylifestyleandcreatingasolutionforthem.Asthenumberofobeseadultsincreasing
rapidlyinAmerica,lifestylehasbecomeanessentialtopicforscientists,whotrytofindthe
causeofunhealthylifestyleandpromoteAmericancollegestudentsdailyhealthylifestyle.

Therefore,
BruntandRhee(2008)reportthatstudentswholivedoffcampushadgreaterhealth
risks,suchasobesityandabnormalBodyMassIndex(BMI),whichis
thebodymassdividedby
thesquareofthebodyheight,
atcorpulentandobesitylevels,drinkingalcohol,smoking,and
eatingafewfruits,vegetables,anddairyproducts.Moreover,Silliman,RodasFortierand
Neyman(2004)claimthatlackoftime,lackofmotivation,andlackofwillpowerwerethe
mostbarrierstohealthyeatingdietregularphysicalexercise.Thelackoftimeisthemost
commonlycitedbarrier.Theyalsoconcludethatthereisagreatnumberofopportunitiesto
improvetheirphysicalexercisehabitsandeatingbehaviors.Malesandfemaleshavedifferent
healthyeatingandphysicalactivityhabitsanddifferentbarriers.Fortunately,
GieckandOlsen
(2007)discover
aparticularprogramofobeseandsedentarycollegestudents,whichisHolistic
Wellness,andtheauthorsprovidedaspecificresourceforotherresearcherstostudyabout
Americancollegestudentslifestyle.
Theysay,
usingaholisticmodelofwellnesstoincrease
activitylevelsofcollegewomen.Inparticular,thismodelmayproveusefulfordeveloping
programsaimedatdevelopingalifestyleapproachtohealthbehavior(p.34).HolisticWellness
ispromisingforAmericancollegestudents,butitisunclearifthisprogramworksfor
internationalcollegestudentsbecauseoflackofresearch.
TheseexpertsstudyAmericancollegestudentslifestyle,andanalyzethecauseofthese
studentsunhealthylifestyle,suchaslivingarrangement,livingenvironment,genderandbarrier
wall.Theyalsocreateahealthprogramtorecorddailyeatingandexercising,whichremindthese
collegestudentstopracticehealthylifestyle.Everyonehasabetterchancetogainhealthy
lifestyle.Unfortunately,unhealthylifestyleisspreadingallovertheworldinrecentyears.For
instance,mostChinesecollegestudentsdonotpossesshealthylifestyle(Wang,Xing&Wu,

2013).However,astheevidencefromtheresearchers,thereis
notsufficientresearchabout
internationalcollegestudentlifestylechoices.Therefore
,myresearchwillstudywhatthe
lifestylechoicesofinternationalcollegestudentsare,particularlyintermsofthatfourfactors.
Myaimistoknowwhatinternationalstudentlifestylechoicesare.andifinternationalstudent
haveunhealthylifestylechoices,Icanshowthemthedamageofunhealthylifestyleandeducate
themabouttheknowledgeoflifestyle.
LiteratureReview
Intheirarticles,BruntandRhee(2008),Racetteetal.(2005),Silliman,RodasFortier
andNeyman(2004)andGruber(2008)suggestthecausesoflifestylechoices.BruntandRhee
(2008)claimthatfoodchoicesandotherhealthbehaviorsarelinkedtolivingarrangementsat
universityintheU.S..Moreover,theyobservethatoffcampusstudentshadgreaterhealthrisks,
andtheyareatcorpulentandobesitylevels,drinkingalcohol,smoking,andeatingafewfruits,
vegetables,anddairyproducts.Moreover,Racetteetal.(2005)reportthatmostfreshmenand
sophomoreinAmericancollegetendedtogainweight,didlessphysicalactivitiesandate
unhealthydietary,whichcausecollegestudentsaweightproblemandobesity.Theyalsofound
thatthecausesofgainingweightandhealthproblemintheearlyyearofcollegearecollege
environment,sedentarylifestyleandunhealthyeatingbehaviors.However,Silliman,
RodasFortierandNeyman(2004)saidthatthemostcommonbarrier,whichisthelackoftime
affectinglifestylechoices.Anothercauseoflifestylechoicesisafriendandpeersupport.Gruber
(2008)statesthatchangingbehaviorpatternsinthefirstfewyearsofcollege,anditisaffected
bysocialsupport.AccordingtoGruber(2008),socialsupportingeneralhasbeenshownto
promoteadherencetodietingandexerciseprogramstoachieveweightloss(p.558).Overall,

theimplicationoftheseauthorsideasaboutthecausesoflifestylechoicesislivingarrangement,
livingenvironment,thecommonbarriers.
GenderisoneofthemostsignificantcausesofAmericancollegestudentlifestyle
choices.Ontheonehand,
BruntandRhee(2008)
argues
thelimitationthattheparticipantswere
mostlywhitecollegefemaleandMalesinthisstudyweremorethanthreetimesmorelikely
thanfemalestobeoverweightorobesebasedonBMI(p.618p.619).
Ontheotherhand,
Gieck
andOlsen(2007)
contends
thelimitationisthattheparticipantsareprimarilywhitewomenand
allmaleparticipantshaddroppedoutbythesecondweekoftheinvestigation
.
Silliman,
RodasFortierandNeyman(2004)
evenstate
mendrankmoresodaandalcohol,consumedfood
inhigherfatdairy,atemoremeat,andatefewervegetablesandfruitsthanwomen.Menalsodid
exercisemorecommonlyandownedhigherbodyintensitythanwomen.Maleandfemalehave
differenthealthyeatingandphysicalactivityhabitsanddifferentbarriers.SimilartoSilliman,
RodasFortierandNeyman(2004),Gruber(2008)alsostatesthatgenderaffectslifestylechoices.
Gruber(2008)claims,femalesreportedreceivinggreatersupportfortheirdietandexercise
actionsthandidmales(p.557).Andfemaletendtogetmoreinspirationtoexercise,practice
healthyeatinghabits,andpayattentiontotheirweightfromtheirfriends.Theauthoralso
reported,Thepatternofresultsshowsthatfemalesweremorelikelytoexerciseordiettolose
weightorbeinactivethanthemales.Themalesweremorelikelytoexerciseorchangetheirdiet
inpreparationforsportscompetition(p.567).Accordingtothesescholarlyarticles,
gender
affectsAmericanstudentslifestylechoices.

BruntandRhee(2008),GieckandOlsen(2007),Racetteetal.(2005),Silliman,
RodasFortierandNeyman(2004)andGruber(2008)
eachconsidersuggestionsforthesolutions

ofunhealthylifestylechoicesintheirrecentworkonAmericancollegestudentlifestyle
choices.Thoughsuggestionsforthesolutionsofunhealthylifestyleisacommontrend,the
authorsdefinethetermdifferently.While
BruntandRhee(2008)
asserts
thehealtheducators
shouldtakeadvantageoftheopportunitythatoffcampusstudentsatincreasedhealthrisks
establishthehealthylifestylesystem.GieckandOlsen(2007)
asserts
HolisticWellnessthatcan
advancealifestyleapproachtohealthbehaviorsanditcanpromotethepsychological
functioningandpreventionofphysicaldiseases
.Asitisusedinthisparticularveinofdiscourse,
Racetteetal.(2005)

claimthathealthylifestylestrategiesmayhelpcollegestudentstodo
physicalexerciseandtoownhealthyeatinghabitsandsustainthestandardbodyweightand
height.
Similarly
,Silliman,RodasFortierandNeyman(2004)saythathealthinstitutional
organizationshouldestablishasystemoflongtermhealthyeatingandphysicalexerciseon
collegestudents.Gruber(2008)states,Whilethisstudyintroducesapotentiallyusefultoolfor
assessingfriendandpeersocialsupportfordietandexercise,considerableworkremains
regardingitspsychometricpropertiesandvalidity(p.573).Theauthoralsoclaimsthatfriend
andpeersupportcanassiststudentseatinghealthyandexercise.Ingeneral,
theessenceofthese
authorsargumentisthesolutionofAmericanstudentsunhealthylifestyle.Theysuggesthealthy
educatorstotakeopportunities,createhealthylifestyle
strategiesandstudentstogetsocial
support.Moreover,GieckandOlsen(2007)hasalreadydevelopedHolisticWellness,ahealthy
program.Overall,theseresourceshaveadviceabout
thesolutionsofunhealthylifestylechoices,
whichhelphealthyeducatorstogettherightdirectiononresearching.
StudiesofthesepreviousauthorshaveindicatedthecausesofAmericanstudentlifestyle
choicesandthesolutionsofunhealthylifestyle,andgenderaffectslifestylechoicesabout

Americanstudents.However,theyhavenotstudiedinternationalstudentlifestylechoices.
Therefore,myresearchwillstudywhatthelifestylechoicesofinternationalcollegestudentsare,
particularlyintermsofthefourfactors,
livingarrangement,livingenvironment,thecommon
barriersandgender.
Methods
IconductedusingasurveytocollectdataaboutNCSUinternationalcollegestudent
lifestylechoices,suchaseatinghabitsandphysicalexercise.Thisquestionnaireconsistedof21
questions.Thereare6demographicquestions,andtheremainingquestionsareconnectedto
internationalcollegestudentlifestylechoices.Inmysurvey,26NCSUinternationalstudents
and1Americanstudentparticipated,including15malesand12females,and
thereare22
freshmen,2juniors,1seniorand2graduatestudent.
IsendmysurveytoFLE101classmates
andafewfriendsthroughmyNCSUemail.Amajorityofparticipantsansweredallthe
questions.Ultimately,thesurveywaswritteninQualtricsandthedatawasanalyzedascolumn
andlineinExcel.

Results
Mystudyistoknowwhatinternationalstudentlifestylechoicesare.andifinternational
studentshaveunhealthylifestylechoices,Icanshowthemthedamageofunhealthylifestyleand
educatethemabouttheknowledgeoflifestyle.Inmysurvey,thereare26NCSUinternational
studentsand1Americanstudent,including15males(56%)and12females(44%),and
thereare
22freshmen,2juniors,1seniorand2graduatestudent.
Onquestion5Ifyouareafreshmanorsophomore,areyoutendingtohaveunhealthy
lifestyleisconnectedwithoneofthefourfactors,livingenvironment.Thisquestionanalyzedif

livingenvironmentcancauseinternationalstudentlifestylechoices.Theresultsshowedthat10
participants(
43.48
%)hadunhealthylifestyleand13participants(
56.52
%)hadanhealthy
lifestyleduringfreshmanyear.Figure1showsmyresultsonquestion5.Moreover,question14
iftheparticipantshadeatendisorderintheirowncountry,whatisthereason?Only1
participant(12.5%)thoughtthelivingenvironmentisthecause.Question16iftheparticipants
hadeatendisorderinU.S.,whatisthereason?Thenumberofparticipants,whothoughtliving
environmentisthecauseoftheirunhealthyeatingbehaviorincreasedto6participants(55%).
Figure2showsthatlivingenvironmentisacauseofNCSUinternationalstudentlifestyle
choices.

Onquestion14,ononehand,2participants(25%)hadeatendisorderintheirown
countryandconsideredlivingarrangement,whichislivingoffcampus,oncampusandwith
parents,affectingtheirunhealthyeatingbehaviors.Ontheotherhand,3participants(27%)had
eatendisorderinU.S.andbelievedthattheirunhealthyeatingbehaviorwascausedbyliving
arrangementonquestion16.
Onquestion10,Iaskedthatwhatparticipantsexcuseofnotdoingexercise.18
participants(69%)consideredthattheexcuseofnotdoingexerciseisalackoftime.Moreover,
10participants(38%)believedthattheexcuseisalackofmotivation,and9participants(35%)

thoughttheexcuseshouldbealackofwillpower.Alackofplanorotherareconsideredtobean
excuseofnotdoingexercisefromtherestofparticipants(23%).Figure3showsthatthe
distributionofexcuseofnotdoingexercisefromparticipants.

Iaskedparticipants,Howoftendoyoueatvegetables.Theresultsshowed5males
(36%)ofteneatvegetables,and7males(50%)usuallyeatvegetablesand2males(14%)eat
vegetablessometimes.However,9females(75%)eatfrequentlyvegetables,and1female(8.3%)
usuallyconsumevegetables.Particularly,1male(6.7%)nevereatvegetablesand2females
(33.3%)rarelyeatvegetables.Similarly,Ialsoaskedthemhowoftentheyeatfruits.Theresults
indicated5males(33.3%)ofteneatfruitswhile8females(66.7%)oftenconsumefruits.
Moreover,5males(33.3%)usuallyconsumefruitswhile3females(25%)usuallyeatfruits.
However,2males(13.3%)rarelyeatand1male(6.7%)nevereatfruits.1female(8.3%)never

eatfruits.Likewise,onquestion9,1male(6.7%)oftendoexercise,and8males(53.3%)usually
doexercise,and2males(13.3%)doexercisesometimes,and1male(6.7%)rarelydoexercise
and2males(13.3%)neverdoexercise.Bycontrast,3females(25%)oftendoexercise,and4
females(33.3%)usuallydoexercise,and1females(8.3%)doexercisesometimes,and3females
(25%)rarelydoexercise.Figure4belowindicatesthatthefrequencyofmaleseatinghabitsand
exercising.ThefrequencyoffemaleseatinghabitsandexercisingisshowninFigure5below.

Discussion
MystudyaimstoknowwhatNCSUinternationalstudentlifestylechoicesare,andI
couldshowthemthedamageofunhealthylifestyleandeducatethemabouttheknowledgeof
lifestylechoicesiftheyhaveunhealthylifestylechoices.Accordingtotheresults,living
environmentisoneofthecausesoflifestylechoices.Inmystudy,livingenvironment,including
freshmanyearandcountry.Ontheonehand,thecountryisconsideredtobeonecauseof
lifestylechoicesbyparticipants.Only1participant(12.5%)hadeatendisorderintheirown
countrywhile6participants(55%)hadeatendisorderinU.S..Thenumberofparticipantshad
eatendisorderinU.S.ishigherthanthoseintheirowncountryinquestion14iftheparticipants
hadeatendisorderintheirowncountry,whatisthereason?andquestion16iftheparticipants

duringfreshmanandsophomoreyear.Consequently,mystudypartlydisagreeswithRacetteet
al.(2005)becausetheyreportthatmostfreshmenandsophomoreinAmericancollegetendedto
gainweight,haveasedentarylifestyleandunhealthyeatingbehaviorsandateunhealthydietary,
whichcausecollegestudentsaweightproblemandobesity.
Respondingtoquestion14and16relatingtolivingarrangement,whichisliving
offcampus,oncampusandwithparents,cannotbeprovedenoughasonecauseoflifestyle
choices.Thereasonisthatonly2participants(25%)whohadeatendisorderintheirowncountry
andonly3participants(27%)whohadeatendisorderinU.S.believedthattheirunhealthyeating
behaviorwascausedbylivingarrangement.However,mystudydoesnotsupporttoBruntand
Rheesresearch(2008)becausetheystatethatfoodchoicesandotherhealthbehaviorsare
connectedtolivingarrangementsatuniversityintheU.S..
ByanalyzingFigure3,18participants(69%)consideredthattheexcuseofnotdoing
exerciseislackoftime.Therefore,itindicatesthatalackoftimeisthemostcommonbarrier.
ThisresultissimilartoRodasFortierandNeymansresearch(2004).Intheirstudy,theyalso
thinkthemostbarrierislackoftime.
Istudyifgenderaffectsinternationalstudentlifestylechoices.Theresultshowed8
males(53.3%)usuallydoexercisewhile4females(33.3%)usuallydoexercise.Thenumberof
females,whooftenandusuallyeatfruits,ishigherthanthoseofmales.Moreover,thenumberof

females,whooftenandusuallyeatvegetables,islowerthanthoseofmales.Theseresultsarenot
completelysupportedbySilliman,RodasFortierandNeyman(2004)becausethey
state
men
consumedfoodinhigherfatdairy,atemoremeat,andatefewervegetablesandfruitsthan
women.However,theirarticlesdosupportmystudybyclaimingmendidexercisemore
commonlythanwomen.
Inmystudy,oneofthemajorlimitationsisreducingthegeneralizabilitytothegeneral
population.
Comparingtothepreviousarticlesbackground,mystudyparticipantsareprimarily
Asian(81%)andfreshmen.Hence,theresultsmaynotrelevanttootherracialpeopleandcollege
ages.Moreover,thereareonly26participantscompletedmysurvey,whichmighthaveskewed
theresults.Othermajorlimitationistheconfusionofthequestions.Thesurveywassenttothe
participantsbyemail,notinperson,sotheymaymisunderstandthequestions.Anothermajor
limitationisnottakingthesurveyseriously.Somepartsofmysurveyarenotcompletedbyafew
participants,soitmaymisrepresenttheresults.
Ultimately,bycomparingtothepreviousscholarlyarticles,NCSUinternationalstudents
havesimilaranddistinctlifestylechoiceswithAmericancollegestudents.However,thereare
notenoughresearchaboutinternationalstudentslifestylechoices.Therefore,Isuggesthealth
advocatesshoulddiscoveriffreshmenandsophomoreyearaffectlifestylechoiceson
internationalstudents,andtheyshouldalsodomoreresearchonwhetherthelivingarrangement
hasimpactsonlifestylechoicesoninternationalstudents,andIproposehealtheducatorsshould
researchthedifferencebetweenmalesandfemaleseatinghabitsoninternationalstudents.
Likewise,theyshouldaskgeneralpopulations:Whateffectscanunhealthylifestylechoices
cause?Doesdepressionisoneofthecausesofeatingdisorder?Theyshouldalsodiscoverthe

reasonof
thenumberofinternationalstudentsmoretendtoeatdisorderinAmericathanthosein
theirhomecountry.Overall,mystudycouldassistthefieldoflifestylechoices.Bycomparing
thepreviousresearchtomystudy,itcanpromotethestudyoflifestylechoicestoalarger
platform.
