Elementary Education
Subject: Math
Topic: Division
Grade Level: Third Grade
Duration: 30 minutes
1. State Standards: 3.OA.2 Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g.,
interpret 56 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned
equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal
shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or
a number of groups can be expressed as 56 8.
2. ITSE Standard Addressed: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to
facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both
face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
A. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
B. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using
digital tools and resources
C. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students
conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
D. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students,
colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments
3. Essential Questions, Prerequisite Skills, Key words, etc:
Essential Questions: Can you divide two digit numbers? Do you understand division?
Goals: Students will be able to divide two digit numbers. Students will be able to grasp
concept of division.
Key Words: Division, divide, dividend, divisor, quotient, and division symbol.
4. Materials:
Materials: Worksheet, Manipulatives, Pencils,
Technology: SmartBoard, SmartBoard Exchange, https://youtu.be/gjqxhtjyfC4
5. Methods of Delivery:
The methods of Delivery that will be used in this lesson are lecture, demonstration, group
discussion, and independent work.
6. IEP/ Differentiation/ Special Considerations:
Behavior Disorders: Allow breaks between instructions.
Auditory Learners: Allow students to give an oral report on the information found.
Instruction Needs: Use a timer to allow students to know how much time they have to
complete an assignment.

7. Anticipatory Set
The teacher will begin the lesson by asking the students to raise their hands and share
what they know about division. The teacher will call on about 2-3 students to share what
they know about division. After the students shared what they know about division the
teacher will display the smartboard activity that will introduce key terms that students
should be aware of. The key terms that will be defined are division, divide, dividend,
divisor, quotient, and division symbol.
8. Instructional Objectives:
The students should be able to divide two digit number and grasp the concept of division.
The students should also be able to define the key words introduced in this lesson.
The students should be able to solve two digit division problems.
The students should be able to identify the definitions of the key terms.
The students should be able to recite the steps in division.
9. Teaching/ Presentation:
a. Input
The teacher will display Learn Division for Kids - 2nd and 3rd Grade on the
Smartboard to hook the students. The teacher will discuss the video with the
students asking question such as Can you recall the terms introduced in this
video? https://youtu.be/gjqxhtjyfC4
b. Modeling
The teacher will explain the division process to the students using manipulates.
For example show the problem 10 2 on the SmartBoard and demonstrate the
process by equally dividing manipulates into two groups. Explain to the students
why the answer is two. Next the teacher will work through three examples. Each
example with have two digit dividend and one digit divisors.
c. Checking for Understanding
The teacher will check for understanding by assessing the three examples they
work through as a class.
10. Guided Practice:
The teacher will display four problems on the SmartBoard. The students will be asked to
raise their hands to volunteer to come up to the board to solve one of the problems. The
students will be required to show their work.
11. Independent Practice:
Each group of student will receive a bag full of manipulatives and a worksheet. The
students will be asked to work with a partner and complete the worksheet using the bag
full of manipulatives. The students will be evaluated on how well they work together with
other and if they understand the concept of division.
12. Closure:
Ask students to share what they learned about division. In addition, ask the student how
they could use division in their everyday life.

13. Assessment Students will be evaluated on how well they grasp the concept of division.
The students will learn about division for the next two following days.
Introduction:
This lesson is designed to introduce the conception of division to third grade students. Students
will be able to grasp the concept of division, divide two digit numbers, and understand key terms
need to divide. This lesson integrates technology that will promote learning and grasp students
attention.
