The lesson 8: Why we need the sun

SST: Noura Abdulla Al Shemili - Yasmin Ibrahim

Date: April 13, 2016

What a beautiful feeling that I felt to teach next lesson that related to the pervious
lesson that taught for my peer observation. It seemed to me challenging part to teach
two lessons without taking rest. I think that was a great experiences that quality me
the work of a real teacher. I welcomed to my lovely colleague who came to observe
me Noura Abdulla Al Shemili - Yasmin Ibrahim. They make me so excited to start
teaching about why we need the sun. I started introducing day, date name of the unit
and lesson on PowerPoint. It is so important step to start lesson in this way. I
discussed classroom rules with my students to make sure of following each rule. I
also motivate them by showing certificate as rewarding. A student who follow rules
and participate will get certificate as reward as keep up going on. As Behaviorism
stated that using positive reinforcement helps students to develop skills and create
environment like competition to challenge (n.d). Next, I showed students learning
objective on display, I let them to think little bit about it such what it means. It is
known that asking question are helping students to promote development of critical
thinking (McClung & Hoglund, n.d). Move on showing a video, I make sure for
students to concentrate on watching video. That is because, I will stop part of video
to ask them. It seemed to me students would like to start watching video and ready. I
noticed that students wonder watch a video is considered useful way to attract visual
learners to learn. For example, watch different pictures, models and characters that
involve them to learn (Learning styles, 2010). As Brunner mentioned that students
learn better while watch a pictures and model that acquire students knowledge and
feel enjoyed at same time (2014). I also observed that students engaged more while
watching a video and they were answering to my questions. Then, I applied formative
assessment in exploring stage. I showed instruction card on display and I gave
students activity to do by themselves. The activity was students should select words
that related to why we need the sun. It could be challenging one, because students
will find lots key words could make them confused. But, the aim is to check their
critical thinking if they can classy words or not. Moreover, the activity implemented
group working, thus when students collaborate as group helps to think in higher level
(Vygotsky, n.d). I think that because each student have own idea, so when they
discuss together assisted to build creative thinking. As I observed that students loved
activity, I think that because it promoted bodily kinesthetic of learning style by using
tools to take effective action while do experiment ( Silver , Strong & Perini, 2016).
Then, I selected one student in each group to present work and discuss as a whole
class. It seemed to me that students did a great working as well. After, I gave
students drawing activity to draw two things that describe why we need the sun. I
applied this activity as group working. But, I think that if I applied such as pairs or
individual will be better. That is because, all students love drawing and would like to
show their opinion of why they need the sun. So, it is better idea next time let

students to do it as individual to promote learning. I also observed that some group

finished early, that is one reason let me to think again should apply it like individual. It
is important matter to give all students chance to promote their learning. The last
activity was imaging such as design, but it was promoting learning for students. I told
students should recommend letter for the sun about why the sun is important to you.
The students were surprising of how I can give letters for the sun such thanks card.
The importance thing is to create creative idea for students that make them excited to
do it. As I marked letter cards seemed to me students wrote a great letter for the sun.
They recommended to the sun how she is considered so important in their life. At the
end, I discussed with my peer colleague about my lesson. They reflected to me that
the lesson was amazing and I used a great strategies in teaching. It is sure that
agree with them points that reflected to me. It was same points that I felt about it.
Both of them recommend to change volume of voice, remind students who moved
around class for classroom rules and improve time management. So, sure I will work
to improve it. Indeed, this was a valuable experiment, because they evaluated me as
a real as not friends. This considered so important for me, because if they were fake
feedback I will not learn from my mistakes. But, if they discussed with me the
feedback will improve skills in progress. I was so pleasure to their feedback that
taught me lots of points should work in. The importance thing is spent lovely time with
me in teaching and with them to discuss feedback.
The teacher also mentioned that I did a perfect lesson rather than yesterday for her
lesson. It was a good comment to her that and I think that changing environment
played role.
