Activity: Pretend Band
Source: Dattilo, J. (1988). Assessing music preferences of persons with severe disabilities.
Therapeutic Recreation Journal, 22, 12-23.
Equipment: Play instruments
Activity Description:
1. Greet everyone with a good morning.
2. Have all participants grab a makeshift instrument.
3. A song will play on the stereo, while those with the makeshift instrument play like they
are playing in the song.
4. It is important that they are playing the instrument similar to how you are supposed to do
it.
5. Repeat for a few songs or until the facilitator deems otherwise.
Leadership considerations:
Since the activity is dealing with props, it is important to make sure that there are no
accidents with them. This is specific to some participants that might use the instruments as a way
to hurt people. The props themselves will be created with tissue boxes and paper towel rolls so
they are not to do much damage.
The safety concern is more applicable to at risk youth. Some of those children with
maladaptive behaviors can lead to someone being hurt. That being said, however, this will
provide them with a chance to become interested in music. The imagination of playing a great
song will inspire them to take up an instrument.
The coordination skill building will also help those affected by Down Syndrome. The
practice of playing doesnt have to be precise, but it will set the foundation for gross motor
control and coordination. This can then evolve to fine motor control and coordination with time.
